Note: I am posting the data unit's progress in replies, it is getting a bit interesting...

Hey, this is for those using the SETI@home screensaver, but I was wondering if the radio and gamma frequencies normally slope down consistently (the low and high frequencies). I seem to remember the data being completely random all the way across, but I cannot get onto another comp at the moment to check. I've done over 70 data units, but for some reason this one just caught my eye (not as an alien signal, wouldn't look like that (hehe), but as a peculiar star).

The reason this seems odd to me is because if a star does not emit all frequencies (which they normally do), they probably would be off to either the radio or gamma ray ends of the spectrum. Why would a star not emit either in higher amounts? Perhaps something (a nebula perhaps?) is blocking these frequencies. I am saying this because certain colors can actually be cancelled out by certain elements (that's how the composition of a star can be determined). This isn't likely though because they will only cancel out small bands...

Sorry, just trying to find explanations for something which is probably normal and I just don't know it. bluetongue.gif

Trying to confirm that this is abnormal before I try to find out what it is, hehe, please let me know if you've seen SETI do this (images may take a second to load):

They're completely random the whole way across normally...

I asked my astronomy teacher about them, and he doesn't know why they're doing that either. Any regularity is what SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is after. I let it complete some more, and now it's even stranger! eek4.gif

The frequencies are no longer dipping down at the upper and lower frequencies, but I have a dip going diagonally across the frequency graph in a straight line! Take a look at these!

Having a dip in the static at one or two frequencies is weird (would be a strange star, and that is all), but having one move diagonally across is very odd... This is because, not only is it a regular pattern (not just static), but it is a systematic change in the frequencies emitted by that section of the sky. Basically it would be similar to our sun changing colors (not exactly that extreme), but it is the same type of change to my knowledge. I do not know of any type of star that would do that, and a pulsar (neutron star) would just pulsate. I'm sure that there is some explanation for what my SETI@home client is analyzing, however I am not aware of it.

When I check my Starry Night Pro 4.5, the only stars that exist in that part of the sky are unknowns. I'll post an image of that shortly as well.

This is just something really odd that caught my interest...

...I think this belongs in the Insanity Board.

Are you trying to be sarcastic? I know that you are not interested in astrophysics, but you don't have to impose your dislike to others.

Double Post: Here's the section of the sky that SETI is scanning (not much can be made from it, but it's kinda interesting I guess)...

The 'telephone poles' represent spikes, their numbers, and their frequencies (I believe).

Note: I'm not saying that this is an alien signal, just that it is an odd star (there are numerous anomolies, this is nothing big, just something interesting).

Sorry cspace but can you do SETI images for dummies as i have no idea what this is about and it just looks like squiggly lines.

(don't mean to be offensive)
my stats...

Mine tends to be completely random as well (though I uninstalled it because the stupid thing kept crashing my computer every few hours... I got one data unit done though. Any hints on fixing it?)

It's at 48% right now, and it went back to it's sloping thing again (at the high and low frequencies). bluetongue.gif

It may have just gone back to calculate a bit more of the previous section, not sure exactly how SETI@home calculates the data, but this is sure irregular (I doubt it's anything big, but it's definitely... different...).

This is a screensaver that, instead of showing images, calculates data units sent to your computer from a telescope array. It sorts out the information, finds spikes, and sends the processed data unit back to them to do further work on it. This is the largest supercomputer in the world (consisting of many thousands of PCs).

You can download it for free at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/, but I wouldn't recommend running it in the background on XP systems (will slow them down for some reason). Running it as a screensaver should run cleanly though (don't know what's wrong with Phieta's, maybe there's a newer version available now).

As for displaying the patch of sky, you need a plugin for the Starry Night program, which I will highly recommend to anyone interested in astronomy. Not free though.

Update: 57% and it now has a low power for all the low frequencies (and normal static for the rest). Here are the images:

I still don't get why mine kept crashing...

1. I have Win98 2E
2. I have a 1.7Gig processor with 512K RAM
3. Running it as a screensaver didn't affect the crashing

Oh well.

Also, I had the newest version at the time...

I posted the most recent pics in my last post, and here's the current diagram of the systematically low frequencies (don't laugh, lol, I made this in a few seconds):

We still have a little less than half left, let's see if the current pattern continues...

(If it only did this for a moment it would not be anything special, however this is continuing and so far I have not seen a frame where it was just random static all the way across)

mabe your picking up some realy hard to see star having death throes. 'bout the only thing i can think of.
My roomate does the cure for cancer project on his computer. We aer thinking of getting the school we atend to put that on all the computers in the computer lab, churn out some cancer killin' data.
