Well, sign up here to participate in this study group.

My first question here is...

Do you believe in supernatural/extraterrestrail beings?

I do.

Supernatural? No.

Extraterrestrial? Well, I have to say maybe. We only know of a teeny tiny bit of the universe, and any other galaxy could have a planet which supports life.

Alright, conflictingness it is.

Oh, Hyper? I sorta believe in ghosts, well, full out, in actuallity, and I fully believe in aliens.

Understood. I know that you believe in supernatural beings, and I can relate to that.

Aliens... I like to think scientifically bluetongue.gif

Hmm...this I am always conflicting on. Ghosts I am not sure exactly. I mean, going through psychology really makes you think about all the human flaws in the mind, as well as all the things that make us work...making us similar to machines. With this view, it is hard to believe in an afterlife (as hard as that is to comprehend or even accept) let alone ghosts, although there are definately energies that make us up that scientists will never fully know, so I am not sure totally on this.

Aliens on the other hand I definately believe in. I mean think about it. Our universe is so full of space and matter that can harbor life that it is nearly impossible to even comprehend thought that aliens could not exist. Reciprically, aliens are not likely to be near enough to us that we, or they for that matter, could ever reach us with the current knowledge of physics. This, however can also be argued, since certain laws in physics are either bent or broken in space...laws that were once thought to apply everywhere in space, and under all conditions.

I pretty much believe in both though I see ghosts as a reflection of the human beings they once were. thumb.gif
Aliens: Definatly there is no way in the entire universe we are the only life-forms.

I don't really believe in ghosts, but I do believe that there is probably life elsewhere in the universe. Whether it is intelligent or not is another question, which I don't plan to provide a single answer. Instead I would provide a question: "What is intelligence?" In my opinion it is the application of creative thinking to either better oneself (or group) or pursue subjects of curiosity.

I think an organism (or "life", for we may not be able to define it as we are familiar with here) needs more than large capabilities with thinking, but a reason to use it. Whether "intelligent" lifeforms exist or not, they may not think parallel to our means of thinking. Therefore I will refuse to answer this question due to the nature of human ignorance (whether there is intelligent life elsewhere), though I will say that there is almost positively something else out there.

As for UFO's, I don't plan to make a conclusion, though if they aren't "us" I believe that they are most likely us from years in the future. Theoretically time travel is possible, and if we had that technology, I bet that everyone here would want to travel back and view history first-hand. They wouldn't want to be seen (because it would affect the course of our future and their past), so they would "hide" with their technology and watch from above. I'm not saying that I believe that, but I feel that it is more likely than aliens due to the "nature of UFO's" if they aren't experimental aircraft of our own making (I don't think aliens would hide from us if there were an interest here, but again, that's our perspective...).

Ghosts? To a certain extent, i.e. spirits, the precense of spirits, etc...

Aliens? I know there is life out there, I just dont think it is as evolved as us.

Contrary to popular belief, what HeadHunter is saying is actually quite possible. Since we know of no extraterrestrial lifeforms, it is realistically impossible to truly derive statistics for the number of aliens in our galaxy. Statistically scientists have predicted the numbers, but until we actually find life and calculate the distance and diversity of life there, statistics have no basis. There are millions of species of all different types on our planet, though only one species is considered "intelligent" by our standards (us, hehe).

If one takes a look at the evolution of the universe itself (for the Big Bang believers), the universe has only been "stable" for around 8 billion years (if you consider it stable, I'll just refer to it as its current stability). The earth formed roughly 6 billion years ago, and was not habitable for life of any complexity for another three billion years. The three billion years since then involved the relatively exponential growth in diversity of lifeforms, and for us it took that long for intelligent animals to appear (we have only been around for a very short time in relation to the earth's timeline).

Not only that, but we are in a stable solar system. While there are billions of stars in our galaxy alone, many would not be suitable for life as we know it (red giants consume planets, nebulae exist around new stars, binary stars may cause irregularity in a planet's climate, etc.). Along with that, earth is (by far) the most stable planet in our solar system alone. Mercury is an oven, Venus is extremely hot and has a toxic atmosphere, Mars has little/no real atmosphere and experiences harsh conditions (though closer to earth than any others), Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune have crushing gravitational force (as well as toxic atmospheres, harsh temperatures, frequent and relatively huge storms...), and forget Pluto (which may be an escaped moon or comet anyway). We could never survive there, and while other lifeforms may be better off in climates like those, their irregularity would make things very hard for them.

In a couple billion years from now the earth would be consumed by the sun, and that's about the padding you can allow for life to reach "intelligence" beyond ours. It's a lot of time, but maybe not relatively. The climate on earth favors life, though the universe is a very harsh place. The universe is rediculously HUGE (if you think you know how big it is, you actually don't grnwink.gif ) and I will say that it is unlikely that we are the most intelligent. I will say this though: For over a year I have been considering the idea that we may actually be the most advanced due to all the factors going against the development of life. While this is unlikely, I will keep this in mind (at least pertaining to our galaxy). Of course there will be little basis other than our speculation until we actually find something.

Yeah, like HH said, aliens may not be as evolved as us. One of Jupiters moons (forget what one) Is just Ice on the surface. The Ice is about half a mile thick and under that is just water. So, there may be life under the surface, but it would not be very highly evolved. They might just be one celled bacteria, but NASA said, it is more than likely that there is life under the surface.

Europa, and that is said to be the most likely place which could harbor life in our solar system other than earth. NASA thinks there is water there, but they aren't positive (need to send a probe to drill there or something).

That might take a while bluetongue.gif

Until technology develops to a certain level (See:Books:Science Fiction: Enders Game bluetongue.gif), we just plain can't be sure of anything.

We have the technology and space probes to get in the ice, but we need a way to use something that dosen't damage life in the sea of ice itself.
