Books For an Otherwise Boring Day

By Jeffrey Sloan

Can’t find any books for those boring days? The following novels might be of interest to you.
Redwall, by Brian Jacques, not only takes place during medieval times, but the characters are rodents. It is the Summer of the Late Rose and Cluny the Scourge, the biggest, strongest, most savage bilge rat ever to jump from ship to shore, and his army of rats, ferrets, stoats, and weasels are coming to the peaceful abbey of Redwall. Cluny’s mad ambition is to conquer Redwall and destroy its citizens, because the abbey would be the perfect place to settle down and start an empire.
On the other hand, the main character, Matthias, a young mouse who is in love with the beautiful Cornflower, must find the legendary sword of the long-dead founder of Redwall, Martin the Warrior, and rise as a hero in order protect the abbey and its citizens.
Another book of the same genre is Water and Fire, by Tamora Pierce, which is actually two books. Four mages in training, Briar, Daja, Sandry, and Tris have been brought to Winding Circle by the mysterious Niklaren Goldeye, who is able to see into the future. The young mages must entwine their magic powers with each other to save the things they love most from earthquakes and pirates.
A wonderful science fiction novel is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. The Formics, better known as the Buggers, are aliens who have attacked earth twice, causing the world to follow the rules and regulations of one organization, the International Fleet.
Ender Wiggin is a military genius, and, at age 5, was taken by the I.F. to the space station known as Battle School, where brilliant children are trained in military strategy for defense against the Buggers. Many children at Battle School dislike Ender, but his positive attitude and genius soon make him a favorite, as well as a leader, among them. However, not everything at Battle School is always what it seems.
This book of politics, war, and human limits and emotions will keep you reading the rest of the series.
The final recommendation, Stotan!, by Chris Crutcher, is a novel written from the perspective of Walker, the main character. Nortie, Jeff, Lion, and Walker are the swim team for Frost High School. The four sign up for a week of the most intense swimming, where they sacrifice their mind and body to their coach. The four friends must help each other through the week. Many problems throughout the book make them bond together even more than before.
So, consider one of the suggested novels. Reading one of them will make an otherwise boring day new and exciting.
