This is not meant to start up racism. I was listening to a debate show on the radio with Glenn Beck (Glennnnnn BECK!), when a black man called. He said that we (white people) should help them (blacks). His response was, and I quote,
"Why? What did you ever do for me?".

It's true, slavery was the forefathers choice, not ours. We don't have slavery now (In America) so why should we help you specifically? You didn't earn our money. You didn't help us with our accomplishments alone.

i think a holiday like that would simply open the door for more resentment over somthing in our history that is imposible to change. yes, slavery was wrong, yes a lot of people were abused, killed, ect. but a holiday to remember that is simply asking for trouble.
on the isue of whites helping blacks, i side with Bill Cosby, and his recent statments saying that blacks should help themselfs more, and not look to others to bail them out. no i'm not racist, i'd help anyone in need, no mater there skin color. but i dont think that gov't sponsored aid for specific groups is the answer.

I don't think they should. But did you guys see The Chapell show where he showed what would've happened if the government gave everyone their reparations for slavary?

That's how it would end with the holiday, only without everyone being rich.....

So I don't think they should get their own holiday for it cause it would cause more trouble.

Is anyone here even black? I'd like to hear another side to this debate, otherwise, well, its not a debate.

I actually got in an arguement about this in my politics class. The person (was black) was arguing that they deserve to be paid for all the hard work their ancestor's endured. My arguement was that it would cost many of us a great deal of money to do this. We would be paying for mistakes we didn't make, shouldn't have to correct, and do not benefit at all from repaying them. He said that if the ancestors were paid, some of that money would still be in the family, and blacks would be better off. He then said how slavery was the worst thing for any race to go through. I laughed a little at that (I'm part native american and part slovakian, can anyone say genocide? Under normal circumstances, I'd never use these as excuses, but he had to bring it up.). The person then proceeded to call me a racist. He was immediately sent to the principals office, given a detention and a small lecture on the consequences of slander upon my request. I freakin love politics class debates. I have yet to lose.

Yeah... If blacks get their own day, then jews get their own day. Do you know how many times the jews were slaves? Egypt, Persia, Germany, Egypt. Egypt...
And whites too. Blacks may think they are the only race to ever be enslaved, but they're not. They want appreciation? They can work for it.

What, you think that by me not being 100% black (which is extremely rare in the U.S., because of slave masters raping slaves), that I would have a different opinion than someone who is more black than I?

My family would agree with me (the black side, since I don't speak Polish), as would many of my black friends. Race has little to do with this edebate.
