ive read that letter 15 times, and all i can get out of it is that the button and receipt were on top of the bureau, and that he takes his sweater with him to london and doesnt know what the button goes to

Ok, sorry for double post but it's a whole new month and no one has got this question, so I'll tell you the answer.

He left them on the bureau, and later on in the episode after they get to the set of that one kid show, and Stewie thinks he's gonna be living there the rest of his life, he asks Brian if he ever figures out what the button was to. He says that it was to Chris' denim jacket. Then they go onto talk about how good it looks on him lol

Ok, so in short, the answer was on the bureau, and to Chris' denim jacket.
