if you make 2 tons of gold from... say poop, then you destroy the economy (sp?) by simply making more gold, so more gold exist!

A sustainable fusion reaction could provide an immense amount of energy. It is, for all practical purposes, infinite. To make a nuclear fusion reaction, all you need is duterium and tritium (isotopes of hydrogen contain 1 and 2 extra neutrons, respectively). Slam these together at high speeds and you disassemble the atom and convert its matter into pure energy. The ratio of mass to the amount of energy you will get from it is difficult to describe. Just think about how small one nuclear bomb is and how big the resulting explosion is. This should give you some idea as to the immense amount of energy that makes up matter. With such an immense amount of energy at our disposal, powering any alchemical reaction wouldn't be impossible. The problem is we cannot yet get a sustainable fusion reaction going that produces a net gain of energy... Once that is possible, I believe we will be seeing some alchemy in the very near future. In fact, I might be interested in becoming an alchemist myself if I can.
