Everyone, Isabel is coming, and it may not have been as strong as it was, but it's still strong. Here's a few safety tips to help you out:

Clean your yard. Experts recommend removing anything that could become flying debris, including dead tree limbs and broken fencing. If the storm gets closer, bring lawn furniture and garbage cans inside. "Batten down the hatches," says Charlie Reese, communications expert at the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), an organization that helps home and business owners protect their property. "It's old advice, but it's still good advice."

Protect your windows. Get plywood panels no less than 7/16" thick and securely fasten the wood over all windows. The experts at IBHS recommend ring shank nails for wood frame houses or permanent anchors and bolts in masonry. Check with your local home improvement store for installation techniques.

Reinforce your garage door. Pros at IBHS say one of a home's most vulnerable spots is the garage. "Brace up the garage door so that it doesn't fold in after the first big wind. If you lose the garage doors, in many homes, the roof comes next," explains Reese. "Just think about it: a couple of two-by-fours could keep your roof on." Temporary center supports can be bought at home improvement centers or from the manufacturer and attached when severe weather threatens.

Be ready for the worst. Develop a family emergency plan and make sure you've stocked your disaster supply kit. Do you know your evacuation routes? Do you have everything you and your family might need when cash machines go down and the power is out for days? Do you have enough gas in your car should you have to evacuate?

Keep the generator outside.
When Hurricane Isabel strikes, many may be ready to fire up alternative power sources when power lines go down. But experts warn that using generators can have tragic consequences if used inside. Fumes produced by a generator can lead to deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. Be sure to operate your alternative power source in a well-ventilated location outside the home to prevent accidental death. As an added safety precaution, get a battery-operated CO alarm that will alert you to deadly air.

Get your priorities straight. "Obviously, the number one priority is personal safety," says Reese, of IHBS. "Your lives are more important than your material goods. Everything else in the world can be replaced, but your life is one of a kind."

I hope this helps. Be safe, be smart.

If you have stuff on your "lanai" throw it in the pool to prevent it from ruining your screen or flying around. Also here in Florida people empty out half of their pool water. The pressure sucks the pools right out of the foundation. ( They are built in the ground pools.)

California doesn't get too many hurricanes, heh. But still, even if you're not in Isabel's path, you should still have contingency plans for any type of emergency, no matter where you live.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

Erg, this is sort of bad. Isabel is hitting where I live directly. Right now it is 8:15 PM, and the eye is almost here...very scary. We have lost power, and the only way I am communicating with everyone is my 2 hour laptop battery! I hope we survive this okay...The wind and rain are coming down pretty hard scared.gif

We're getting wind now, but no rain yet (we will) I'm expecting power to go out, and I'm a bit scared too...

We march... We march to war... We march... We fight... We are Spartans. Blood will fall, but it will not be ours... We march... Sparta is war reborn... we are the children of war... We are Spartans.
I am Leonidas, and this is my story. I have met the wolf, felt its bite, and I have survived. These new wolves are neverending, but Sparta will show true might. Though we fall, still we will come for we are war incarnate. I have started this, and so must I finish it. Xerxes shall die, this I, Leonidas, warlord of Sparta, do say. This is the story of the 300... the story of Spartan heroism. Though we bled the ground red at Thermopolyae, still we live on.
War is Sparta, We are Spartans. We are War!

Just to assure everyone, I live fairly near Cspace, and we weren't hit that badly. There were no deaths in the county. So, (un)fortunately, Cspace is still among us. I haven't heard from him at all since the hurricane, but I'm sure he's fine. He might not have power back on yet, though, bwaha. Serves him right for making fun of me when my power was off for a week. Stupid electric company. Anyway, the hurricane wasn't as bad as people hyped it up to be, although it did break quite a few trees. A few down at the eye of the storm in North Carolina have been killed, as I heard from the news, but to the best of my knowledge, none of us further north were killed. So, however pleasing or displeasing this information might be, Cspace is still alive. Just so everyone knows.
Cspace - "Eagles may soar but turkeys don't get sucked into jet engines" says:
I bow to the supreme wrath of Lord Crescens.
