Yesterday afternoon in an unprecedented court hearing, a young boy of fifteen successfully won his lawsuit against Jagex, who run an online RPG game. The teenager claimed the game had effectively wasted two years of his life and rendered him unintelligent and unable to communicate with the outside world.

The boy's lawyer yesterday claimed "The game has an unexplainable attraction that convinces the player they are having fun, despite the fact that all they are doing is performing repetitive tasks to increase their statistics." He continued, "The game is actually a graphical nightmare and its gameplay is simple at best. Yet something, perhaps by subliminal means, forces the player - against his will - to play the game, and to believe that they are having fun."

The jury voted unanimously in the teenager's favour, who will receive five thousand pounds in compensation.

Jagex spokesman, Mr. P Hartnell, said "These claims are both ridiculous and embarassing. Clearly the kid needs to get out more - our games maybe fun but we do not force players to take part." When questioned about the alleged subliminal tactics, Hartnell refused to comment.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, explained why the game had such a devastating effect on life: "You kind of get into a daily routine. You get up, you load up runescape, and you play it. You can't go and do anything else because you want to get your stats up higher than anyone else." He elaborated further: "You end up repetitively increasing your stats every day. You want more, and more. You don't even talk to players on the game you're so involved. You end up entirely withdrawn from the world."

His lawyer told us more about how his life had been devasted by the game. "He never went out from his house except on special occasions, for 3 whole years. He didn't even go to school." When asked how his intelligence had been affected, he replied: "What intelligence?"

The future for Jagex Ltd looks bleak, as many more teenagers are already filing lawsuits against the company.

Eheh... is there a website article to go with this? Sounds like it could happen if there was the right jury. I think they tried doing that in America with Everquest. Nothing came of it though because it was the persons own free will that brought them to play.

By the same logic, they could sue television shows for showing series that makes you absolutely want to tune in next time, thus corrupting your mind or whatever...

This is like back in 2002 when people were sueing McDonalds because they were getting Fat. I mean it isnt a crime for a company like McDonalds for people to eat. It is their decision.

I don't believe this actually. You can't trust people who post these things, especially when there is an error in the spokesman's grammar during his statement. ("Maybe", should be "May Be").

I don't see a source, but if you show me one then I would comment on it. I won't be commenting on a joke that someone may have posted on another site.

Eh ... I need to see a source before I believe something like this. But I wouldn't be surprised if he did have a source, and it turned out to be true. Especially since it's in Europe.

Modern society, ugh. People never take responsibility for their actions anymore.

RuneScape is a computer entertainment product and is operated with the intention of providing our users with an immersive, challenging and entertaining experience which they can enjoy from home, work or college via an online device.

Whilst we do not block people from being logged in to RuneScape over a certain number of hours we do not want or encourage people to play for more hours than is reasonable.

1. Take a break from the computer, read a book, watch a movie
2. Take exercise at least once a week
3. Remember it is just a game
4. When eating, take break from the computer - it'll still be there when you come back
5. Don't ignore your real life friends, meet up with them on a regular basis
6. Work, or study matters, don't let playing a game stop you doing well in your studies or at work.

If you feel that your use of RuneScape is out of control and you are finding it difficult following some or all of the steps mentioned above, then please seek advice and help from a responsible adult, or medical professional.

Please follow these simple guidelines to maintain a balanced life and get the most out of playing RuneScape.

As you can see, Runescape already has a guide for responsible gaming. It's his fault he didn't view this, maybe it could have helped him...

That can't be right! Runescape is just a game for people to have fun. People shouldn't be so addicted that they end up like that and then they just sue the company for launching a game which made them play it so often.

Joke. It's on that "free-games" forum, filled to the brim with idiots.
