The Crusades were not entirely religiously motivated. The Catholic Church used the guise of religion as an excuse for wanting to control trade routes from Europe to Asia. The Crusades were much more economically and politically motivated than religiously. Some Crusaders actually believed in the Pope's promise of salvation, but most shared the church's greed and wanted the benefits of dominating trade routes. (In one of the Crusades, mercenary crusaders attacked the Byzantine Empire (a Christian Empire) and Eastern Orthodox Christians while en route to going to kill Muslims.)

Even if we were faced with impending doom due to lack of heterosexuals, I'd like to think humanity would be smart enough to start having "straight sex" (hell, even test tube babies) in order to reproduce.
You have a more positive view of humanity than I do. As for the idea of mass production of test tube babies, I refer everyone to Aldous Huxley's
Brave New World. Between that and genetic engineering we'd end up in a pretty crappy world. Frankly, I feel that acceptance is the first step toward assimilation into something. I think if humanity starts to run low on population, it's screwed. Not to mention that we'll probably all blow each other up anyway. (Again, Brave New World.)
PS: If homosexuality were purely genetic, the gene trait would have prevented the gene from continually being put through the gene pool.
