If you do just feel like exploring, then it probably is best to only take 3 (or 0) items. Since there's nothing to lose

However, if you're out there because of a clue you're going to need a bit more protection.
Too many times have I seen people go out into the wildy for a clue with no armour, because they don't want to lose the clue and co-ordinate equipment (sextant, chart & watch) if they die. Then they go out there, get attacked, die and end up losing the stuff anyway because they had food or something on them. They were so easily killed because of no protection armour offers.
Here are my tips for clue hunting in the wilderness:
- Keep in mind that there is never a guarantee that you won't be PKed, so you still don't want to take out alot of valuable stuff.
- WEAR ARMOUR!
Yes, armour is important. Even dragonhide armour will do. It offers decent protection, weighs less and isn't as expensive as going out in rune.
I recommend wearing -
---- Chest, chaps and vambraces of the best dragon leather you can wear.
---- Any full helmet, even a coif. Any protection is better than none, right?

---- Boots of lightness if you've got them, otherwise boots don't make much difference (except for armoured boots if you want to wear them, which could be a costly loss)
---- A cape (once again, any protection is better than one. And a cape isn't exactly a big loss

---- (Emerald) Amulet of Defence is fine, But (Diamond) Ammy of Power is a good choice too.
- Weapon
If you're in the wilderness for a clue, there's a good chance you'll have to fight a Zamorak (or even Saradomin) Mage. So you'll need a decent weapon to kill them with.
- Make sure your prayer is charged.
Self explanatory. Just in case you need to turn on protect from whatever you're being attacked with. You shouldn't need to take a prayer pot.
- Teleport runes
Just in case... You might be ok to just walk out of the wilderness once you've got the clue. However, if you're being chased (and someone hasn't cast tele-block on you) You'll need them for as soon as you get into level 20 wildy.
- Energy potions
These are handy, they'll let you keep running for longer. PKers don't often have these with them so these should make your energy last longer and give you the chance to outrun them. One or two will be fine.
- Food
Lobsters are fine. I wouldn't take anything lower, and of course something that heals more would be better. But once you've got everything else you need, fill the rest of your inventory with whatever food you decide to take ad you should be fine.
Don't take cakes! Cakes may heal as much as lobbies, but take 3 bites to eat the whole thing. Which means they heal WAY too slowly to be effective enough if you're being attacked.
- If you're attacked, STAY CALM
This is an important one. (I know from experience) Remember if you get attacked, you run SOUTH. Then, slap on the appropriate protect prayer and keep running. Eat if you get hit, take a dose of your energy pot every now and then, but not too often.
Keep an eye on the wilderness level you're in and teleport as soon as you get down to level 20.
- Better safe than sorry - It's ok to log out
I know, it seems like a pretty cowardly way out, but if you want, you can get the log out button ready and hit it the second you see a white dot on your radar. Then wait about a minute before going back on, or switch worlds.
I have a bad habit of waiting til I can see what level they are before logging out. It's got me into trouble a few times. (But I've still never died while doing a clue

(It's not ok to log out if you see people while you're PKing.

Remember those tips and you should be fine. Especially staying calm and running south if you're attacked.
If you're lucky, you'll stroll right in there, dig up the casket and stroll back out without a problem. These precautions are for just in case you're not feeling so lucky

I hope I've covered everything about surviving in the wilderness, but remember to ask questions if you have any and I'll be happy to help you out.
