So, has anyone played Descent? Descent II? Great games, I think. If you haven't, try the Descent II demo. It's a DOS game so you might have trouble running it on XP, but give it a shot! It's a lot of fun and I'm itching to play again -- now, if I could just find my joystick...

If you like it, try looking in the bargain bins at your local gaming store. There's a Win95 version that should run fine on newer computers grnwink.gif

EDIT: Actually, I can't start the game. Like you said, XP ain't good for this. Oh well. Sounded fun sad.gif

It's a first-person shooter, but instead of running and jumping around on the ground, you pilot a small fighter ship (called the Pyro GX -- gotta love a ship called Pyro!) which means you can move in any direction. The story takes place some time in the future. You work for the PTMC (Post-Terran Mining Corporation) which operates throughout the Sol System and, in Descent II, outside it as well. The PTMC's mines are mostly automated, powered by a nuclear reactor and operated by robots, with a few humans to take care of any problems that occur. Your mission is to go into the mines, rescue the hostages, and destroy the reactor. Eh, double-post...

Apparently I'm not the only one still interested in Descent II; there's a project (still active!) called D2X... it adds OpenGL support, a new multiplayer mode ("Entropy" from Descent III), and more... and, though I don't really care, it runs not only on Win95+ (including CE, though I don't know why you'd want it) but also on *nix (Linux, Unix, even Mac OS X) too.

As an added bonus, the guy working on D2X is also doing DLE-XP, a completely free level editor based on DMB2 (you probably don't care, but DMB2 was about the best level editor around, even though you had to buy it and it was buggy). This proves interesting.

Now... if I could just convince my friends to buy joysticks and throw another LAN party... ;-P

D2X... I wonder if thats the project my old high school friend is working on. He was with a group making a Descent-esque game. Forgot the details though.

As for the game, that was so much fun...

i have descent 1&2 + extra lvs... and descent freespace 1&2 btw does ne1 want to go to squadwar.com if its still up & have a war? (its prob not up nemore tho...dam) i hope they make a freespace 3... killing shivans is fun....
