I took my camera with me to school today; thought I'd share. Life through the eyes of Phi...

This is the hill I walk up every morning to get to the bus stop. It's... hilly, I guess.
user posted image

And the bus stop, of course, is at a meaningfully-named location.
user posted image

Ah! Here's the bus now. It's blurry, as is the rest of my morning. I don't wake up until 3rd period most days.
user posted image

By the advanced technology known as Pete-not-taking-enough-pics, we're now at Monterey High School. I walked up another hill before taking this picture. Our school is built on, of course, another hill. How very handy. Hilly and helly. Yes.
user posted image

Construction for the school began in 1905 and is still in progress, just like the California freeway system. (No, actually, they're putting in wheelchair ramps... this has been going on since last summer)
user posted image

Lower campus isn't used for much anymore, but the buses drop us off at, of course, the bottom of the hill. So up we go.
user posted image

The boardwalk isn't a place by the beach with roller coasters and carnival food... it's just some wood on the ground... (yeah, the construction has everything all weird)
user posted image

We've now walked the board and climbed the bleachers. Here's a view from the top there. Look carefully and you can see two long white lines near the bottom of the lower field (which is nearer to the top of the pic), slightly to the right of the centerline of the pic. Those are the tops of school buses. It's a bit of a walk.
user posted image

Now we continue. Most of the hilliness is passed, but it still takes another minute or two to get to the very top of campus... and we're on the wrong end. Now, across the campus to Junior Hall...
user posted image

I usually hang out there in the morning before 1st period... band! Normally we have a 6-period day, but today is different. Today we're going to Hartnell College for a band festival. This means 1st and 6th period I get to screw around at the music building, and 2nd through 5th we'll be gone. So, in the spirit of screwing around... a totally random pic of my friend Scott. (I like randomly shooting people when they don't realize I have a camera.)
user posted image

Equally random is this shot of Chris.
user posted image

I still don't understand the gigantic smokestack sticking out of the Randall Gym. It makes it look like a crematorium. Which it probably is anyway.
user posted image

Alright, time to get that bus fully loaded! That's the best way to ride -- fully loaded. Just ask Mattbro ;-P
user posted image

And again utilizing my lack of photography, we arrive in Salinas not in 45 minutes, but in however much time it took the pic to load! Isn't that amazing! Anyway, we walk to some building to go warm up.
user posted image

And here we are warming up. It was nice to finally play in a room that actually had non-sucky acoustics.
user posted image

And I'll start a third sentence with "and." So we go to ze stage to perform. Judges liked us but said the low tones need to be brought out more. (We've known this for months.)
user posted image

We wandered around to find lunch. In the process, I found a statue of the school mascot. Here ya go Dragster.
user posted image

Whoosh! Back to Monterey High. Random picture again.
user posted image

I changed to street clothes before I left school because I didn't feel like walking 2.5 miles in dress shoes. Stopped by the library, then headed for Alvarado street.

This is the Golden State Theatre. It was Monterey's first moviehouses and one of the first in California (maybe the first, not sure). Awhile back it was ran cheaply, kept unclean and such, and the owners converted the balcony into two smaller theaters so they could compete with megaplexes. Now some rich guy bought it so that he could restore it "for the fun of it." Not that we mind TheSmile.gif
user posted image

I walked down to Fisherman's Wharf. At the end of the wharf is a restaurant called Rappa's... has a great view. Cool thing about it is the roof is open to the public as an observation deck. The camera had an option to take panoramic photos, but unfortunately I don't have the software to actually stitch the images together... so here's a photoshopped version.
Right-click and "Save Link As..." or "Save Target As..." please

Alternately, here's a non-panoramic view.
user posted image

And this is what the wharf itself looks like. This is the view you'd see walking down the wharf as opposed to walking back onto land... which is what we're doing now... confusing, no?
user posted image

So we continue down the Rec Trail past the wharf a bit to Heritage Harbor. I saw some tired-ish birds sitting on a rock and figured they were easy targets, so I shot them. With a camera.
user posted image

While I was down on the beach I couldn't resist leaving a message grnwink.gif
user posted image

And here's some... rusty junk... and rocks... ish...

Edward Ricketts
1897-1948
Marine Biologist, philosopher, writer, ecologist, and friend to many. Immortalized as "Doc" of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, the real man had a profound influence on the thinking of writers, artists, and scientists through his non-teleological approach to the study of all life. Steinbeck described him as a man whose "mind had no horizons, he had an interest in everything."
At his laboratory on Cannery Row, he built up the most comprehensive file of marine tidal animals ever attempted on the Pacific Coast. His marine science writings which include Between Pacific Tides, Sea of Cortez, and The Outer Shores are still among the most respected works in the field.
His life was cut short when the car he was driving was struck by the evening train at this site on May 8, 1948. However, his influence on the world community and the people of Cannery Row will live forever.

More on the rec trail. Old tanks like these are relics of the old canneries of Cannery Row -- they can't be removed because they're historical. This one used to be rusted all over until someone decided it looked like a submarine and decided to offer a tribute to the Beatles.
user posted image

Ever seen the movie Forrest Gump? We have the restaurant. Ha. (I'm sure it's a chain, but this is the only one I know of.)
user posted image

Special treat! You guys get to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium!
user posted image

The Kelp Forest exhibit started as a giant experiment just to see if we could get kelp to grow in an artificial environment. It worked. Incidently, all those plants growing on the rockwork were not added by the Aquarium. They came in through the pipes. Yeah. And this is another panorama.

The entire first floor of the Nearshore Wing is being remodeled and should open around Labor Day. Here's a peek at the construction from the third-floor balcony.
user posted image

Also from the third floor is this view of the Great Tide Pool.
user posted image

I call this one "blurry fish." The Outer Bay is pretty dark, so... long exposure... at least I had a tripod. (Those faint lines in the window are actually where it was welded together -- it's the third-largest in the world and was brought in by helicopter, in five pieces.)
user posted image

Downstairs in Jellies: Living Art is an endless tunnel of Moon Jellies. (It actually uses mirrors, but don't tell anyone.) Yes, that's me in the pic. I'm too sexy for you.
user posted image

Into Sharks: Myth and Mystery, our newest exhibit (opened about a year ago). Here's... a random ray. No clue what species.
user posted image

And I otter show you this pic...
user posted image

That's it. At this point I walked up an even bigger hill or three to get home.

I just realized I uploaded the non-retouched versions of all the pics. Oh well.

I remember going to the Monterey Bay aquarium a while ago (4 years, I think). It was loads of fun. My brother has the mouse pad to prove it.

^_^ Otter! Otter Creek is near my house, but there hasn't been any otters in it for probably 70+ years. It's part of the most polluted watershed in the state (and I live in it).
