Yaknow that banner that we have for the forum?
Could we replace it? I'm sure anybody with photoshop could make a better one...
I could make a few and show them for you guys to pick from... but seriously the one now is bad.

I know we've all gotten used to it, but put it in perspective with some other website's banners....
I mean, when you're looking fora clan, the first thing you see is the banner

I quite like the current one, but if anyone wanted to make a different one (and included the same info, and probably the SeeD and CurvedSpace logos in the top right), I'm sure Cspace would consider changing it.

Personally, I like it, and it doesn't need replacing. Sure, if anyone's willing to come up with a better one, go right ahead. But I still like this one.

Perhaps you could say exactly what you don't like about it, I don't really want to replace it with someone else's work but if there is something in particular that you don't like let me know.

There is no banner that will be liked by everyone, people take to different motifs, it is a simple fact. That's why there are multiple skins, to allow members to alter the site to their liking to the greatest possible extent. There are some who take a liking to the pure black template, while some keep asking for a light one (for example). Some like darker banners, some like lighter banners, some like many colors, some like simplicity, some like a metallic look, some like a more organic look, some like a look that is more in motion (creative use of blurs and whatnot), and some simply like nice text.


In making the banners, both the one on the main site as well as the one on the undocked forums, I made an attempt to incorporate older motifs into the new look. So we don't seem like a new site all of a sudden. Certain elements such as the blue star, the 'Griever' lion emblem, warped space, and that blue crescent in the CurvedSpace logo all are symbolic of our site in some way (the blue star and the crescent going back more than three years). Since it is CurvedSpace I made it revolve around the warped space look, but since it is also SeeD I added the Ragnarok to it which is not out of place in a space motif. Basically there are some nitpicky things that need to be there and can only really be designed by someone who knew the old site and how it progressed.

But as I said, if you have suggestions just send them to me. And yes, I use Photoshop, but I also created that banner (if you're talking about the one on the main site) at 2:30 in the morning.

But then again, if you're talking about the small undocked forum banner, I agree that it needs work. I was planning on changing it in the near future to match the main site (not the same banner, but something with obvious continuity).

yeah thats true, everyone has different opinions and tastes. if someone likes something, theres always someone who doesnt.

Sorry if I sounded harsh (lol), didn't mean to.

But I agree that the undocked forum banner needs updating. When I have a creative flux of sorts (usually late at night, that's why I tend to update after midnight) and some time to burn I'll see what I can concoct.

Also had some size issues when I made the forum banner originally which is why it's squashed. But I have a little bit more freedom to mess with it now. Can't make any guarantees of instant perfection but I'll work on it until it is right.

Yea, the undocked one you can fix easily without much complaining.
What I don't like about the banner now is that it's a little too 'MS paint'-ey. Kinda hard to explain, but it just seems that the seperate elements of the banner could blend together in a better way (maybe make the opacity in the lower-right blovk thing a little lower, make the edge of the bevel a white to transparent gradient instead of pure white, yaknow, stuff like that).

Yeah, the undocked banner. I made it a while back, before I was really experimenting with css and ended up having to squeeze it together. Back when I did it I think I remember saying that I'll fix it, I just forgot.

You can do a lot to it, the layer opacity you're talking about though is not something to be abused, lol (and I did use it in that banner slightly). Using that opacity filter in some ways, as with some other filters, can make an image appear "photoshop-ey" as well if it is an over-used effect, which isn't necessarily a good thing either. Can also use glows, blurs, the directed lighting effects, dabble with 3D, among other things. Also I was experimenting with a harder look which is why I cranked up the bevel's depth, which is why the border's colors have such a contrast. There are a number of intricacies and effects that can be used, not short of even changing the shape of the pixels in some cases (though usually only for tv is this necessary). Just need some time to be able to think about it.
