Today, I switched over from French Horn as my "classical" instrument to Upright Bass. I figure it will help my electric bass playing a lot, but making the change from treble to bass clef is hard. screama.gif Even then, I played "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" with him on the keys. TheSmile.gif

I can pluck really well, but when it comes to using a bow, I'm terrible. I usually make squeaky notes for the first 5 minutes it's in my hand before I figure it out. bluetongue.gif

Anyone out there play upright bass (or even French Horn, or any obscure instrument, for that matter), or have a story similar to mine (the treble to bass clef blues)?

Because music was a required class in middle school, I played the trumpet in the school's advanced band. The year before that in elementary school, I played the viola. Those were both treble clef, so I really didn't have any problems.

playing a classical version of the bass probably won't help you, especially if you've started playing the upright AFTER you started on the electric. i've been playing the violin, and that didn't really help my guitar skills much. a basic knowledge of the piano, however, proved useful.

Hehe... I just play too many musical instruments. bluetongue.gif

Although playing the variety I do kinda contributes to helping me to play all the other instruments I play. Keyboard has helped me read chords and know what notes are in what chord as well as the notes in the scale, basic Piano skills have helped me learn how to read averagely in the Bass Cleff, and Theory of Music has helped me learn all the rest of the things to do with music along with the ability to read in the Tenor Clef and the Alto Clef.

Although... I've discovered that playing the Flute is deteriorating my Clarinet fingering after nearly 4 years of playing both. I found out I've been using the Flute fingering for F Sharp in the upper register on the Clarinet for a while and I've never noticed because it sounds nearly the same but if you had perfect pitch it sounds pretty bad.

But playing the Violin has helped. I've finally learned to virbrato after several years (yeah I know I'm lazy...) and playing the Guitar helps practice virbrato as well.

And of course Drums helps me keep the beat in music. bluetongue.gif

However I might just scrap most of my musical instruments next year... it's just gotten boring. And everyone thinks music is my career but like it's only a hobby. eek7.gif

Arg... I hates you Janey.

I only know how to play clarinet... I'd like to learn guitar, but I lack the all-important monies.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

Hey I envy you because you only know one instrument. bluetongue.gif

I honestly don't know how I get around learning 5 different musical instruments... I might just stick to the Clarinet and the Drums next year and shock everyone at the Hamilton Community Centre of Music. I've been part of that since I was 7... my Keyboard teacher definitely will flip when she finds out. icon_sweatdrop.gif

I'll have to be able to withstand a year of everyone saying to me "Oh my! You stopped all those instruments? But why? I thought you wanted to be a musician!"

When people mention musician I feel like strangling them.

Woah, cool! Should I assume that means that I'll see you Wednesday in orchestra? Awesomeness... bluetongue.gif

Well, I play the cello (in addition to the piano), and I can tell you that it's nothing huge. The bow... Well, I know that it's a lot bigger and bulkier than a lil' ol' cello, but as lone as you A) Put the right amount of pressure on it, and B) Position it correctly, you should be fine. May I suggest putting tapes on the neck of it, so as to guide you to each note on the string?

Trust me, you'll get into it quickly. Pitzzacato (SP?) is really fun.
