There have been various comments regarding both the sizes of sigs as well as the actual compatibility of their content with different browsers. We were considering removing the ability to use HTML in sigs, as well as putting further limits on file size, but that is not really necessary at this moment since they can be moderated as well (although that may change when activity increases to a certain point).

Instead of taking away members' abilities to express themselves, we are just going to require some re-arrangement of their content. I have just added a new field to everyone's profiles known as one's 'extended signature'. It is not quite as limited because it will not hinder with the viewing of the board. HTML can also be used in your extended signature.

Upcoming Additional Limits To Main Signatures:

- Cannot use vertical marquees. Horizontal marquees are fine, but vertical marquees will distort the page on certain browsers. For some they either will not load (leaving a long list of text and images) or they will not load immediately (leaving a long list until everything loads, then the page starts reconfiguring itself). I am talking about something to the effect of this...

[vmarquee=2]Vertical Marquee - Can No Longer Use In Signatures[/vmarquee]

[marquee]Horizontal Marquee - This Is Okay[/marquee]

- Cannot use DHTML or any other unusual or dynamic content. Won't load on all browsers and could distort the page.

- Cannot include music or video, even if it does not start by default.

- Cannot exceed roughly half a page on 1024x768. We're not going to pull out a ruler, but please try to aim for half a page at the most. We have visitors with all resolutions, and having signatures that consume the post is not really all that respectful to others who just want to view the thread. Compared to some boards, even half a page is considered a lot.

*********************************************

When It Comes To The Extended Sig...

- Use vertical marquees as much as you want. "Sig" members all you want. It's your profile that you would be potentially distorting. bluetongue.gif

- Please, no music or video... It could be removed by a moderator if caught.

- Nothing excessively huge. Remember who's server will have to serve it. ShiftyEyes_anim.gif

- Do anything you can also do in your regular sig. If your sig will exceed roughly half a page on 1024x768, please move something to your extended sig so the dimensions are alright.

- Anything placed in one's extended sig that is against the general rules will require action to be taken as with anything else on the site.

*********************************************

This will be managed by the moderators as of October 11th (a week from today), but I'd recommend that you start thinking about reconfiguring your sig as of right now (or just doing it now). Moderators with profile-editing abilities will be able to re-arrange it without notice if necessary, however anything removed from your main sig that is not against the general board rules will be transferred to the bottom of your extended sig.

Also, while I'm not going to put a finite limit on them right now... Please think about the number of images in your sig (even if in a marquee). If an excessive number of images are used it would unnecessarily slow down the load times for those without broadband.

If one is going to use a marquee to have a mess of images fit in a sig, I'd personally recommend that some are placed in his/her extended sig instead.

A good design for a sig isn't necessarily one that can put the most into the smallest space, but one that displays what is most important. I remember a while back on another board I used to visit, one person said something to the effect of "Your signature isn't supposed to be your life story". A "signature" is technically supposed to be your mark... something like an image that will identify you, not necessarily something that will tell someone everything about you.

Also remember that if you fit a ton of stuff into a marquee, few are going to bother looking at what is in it (since they would practically be seeing your sig in the background while reading a thread that interests them). As an example, one would be better off having a single important image that everyone would see than having an array of images that will be ignored.

Well... It's actually a little longer than is recommended icon_sweatdrop.gif

Personally, I think the bottom part should be refined a little (in terms of height).. But that's just my opinion.

Actually on my other old comp, Final's avatar makes my comp lag whenever I scroll past it. icon_sweatdrop.gif it doesn't at all on this one though, so I dunno.

I agree that a signature isn't your "life story", it's just a signature, your John Hancock, although you can just put something else instead of your name if you want, but not a whole bunch of things that people are unlikely to view anyways. eek7.gif Just one image and maybe a few lines of text should be the average.

Personally, I think it's probably okay. I would consider that the maximum of what would be allowed at the moment though.

Maybe limit the number of marquees allowed?
