Okay...

To start with, I know that the EU has a ban on a bunch of GMO foods from the US. If you're in Europe and its Fourth Reich of a Union this doesn't concern you.

So GMO foods (foods that are genetically modified) may contain genes from completely different foods and may have unforeseen effects on people. So some people think they should all be given a big label that says "yar, this food was genetically modified. And may be potentially harmful."

On the other hand, doing so would drastically hurt the companies that produce such foods, providing them with no incentive to produce them if people are going to be afraid of them. Also, very thorough testing is done on all GMO foods that are going to be released for human consumption.

Would like to hear what everyone has to say on this issue.

Personally, I think the foods should be labelled as being genetically modified. I'm a big health person mainly because I do some bodybuilding and am interested in what is in the certain foods I'm eating, or feeding my children. Also, I would never buy any genetically altered fruit. I can see how it would negatively affect a company, but I'm sure it could also benefit it. These foods could become popular in certain ways that aren't known at this moment, people might become more interested in genetically altered foods...

I'm not saying they need to put a big red label on it, but it should be standard procedure to show the consumer how it was grown, treated, injected, etc...

There is no way to be 100% sure. However, we can get enough testing done to be 99.99999% sure. The question is whether that .00001% (possibly exaggerated figure) is worth the massive amount of loss in profits for companies caused by putting a label on all food denoting that "this product is a GMO product" as though there is definitively something to fear from them. GMO foods are even portrayed in movies (such as Shaun of the Dead, not that that's a very credible example) as having very negative effects (such as killing people and turning them into zombies).

I understand the views of both sides here, but since both opinions presented thusfar have been pro-labelling I figured I'd throw in an opposing argument to get the debate going.

I agree that these foods should be labeled. There are many people out there concerned about what they're eating, and it would definitely get them upset if they knew there were foods out there that could cause possible harm to them and they wouldn't know about it because the company wanted to save money.

I believe it should be labeled as such, but personally, eating genetically modified foods does not bother me.

I say label the genetically modified foods, because that is like going behind the consumer's back by not telling them that the food they are buying is genetically modified.

They should be labelled, but only if there is an actual ingredient in the food which has been modified. Not crap like: "This chicken was fed with genetically modified corn".

Probably is a good idea to label things as genetically modified... Some people would like to know that.

It's really down to the choice of the fda not the food companies whether it passes labeling. Any food that is stamped and approved by the fda is safe to eat, usually. . . but it isnt really up to the food companies whether they label their foods or not because all the big companies answer to them and say whether something is labeled as gmo or not. *looks around* Their watching us...
