QUOTE
A year later. And it still happens.

Not sure what you mean. When it comes to members being made moderators, there are many more that are capable of being mods than we can physically have as mods. The position should not be taken as recognition because it can't physically be used as such. We also don't have a strong need for more at the moment, our response time is really quick with the exception of a few rare circumstances. That will change as either activity increases or the mods' activity decreases, but it's fairly balanced at the moment.

A few have also brought up the inactive moderators, and something will be done about that when another mod update is necessary. They don't hurt us by being inactive, and for damage control it's best to handle that sort of thing when in the process of introducing new mods. That will at least be the case for the next update along these lines.

When referring to current moderators causing problems, I'm not really sure where that would apply to be honest. Sure, they're not perfect (most of them are human bluetongue.gif), but if any moderator makes a mistake there are roads to correct it. By all means it should be addressed when that's the case, and such issues haven't been brought up very much (if at all) lately.

I mean all these people coming here advertising stuff that they shoulden't, over spamming, or just plain causing trouble...It doesn't get fixed propperly for a day. We need to nearly have 1 mod on at all times to deal with things like that. bluetongue.gif

And having about 20 inactive mods won't really help. XD132.gif

EDIT: OMG you said most of them are human. 2eyes.gif

I told the moderators not to moderate lone, harmless posts. If an argument breaks out, we also let things play out unless it truly goes too far. When it comes to stuff like ads that need to be moderated, it's generally handled quickly if it's obvious. There's almost always an orange, purple, blue, or green name online at any active time. I'm sure there are times when none are on, but such periods are almost always very short.

Some communities strive for perfection, telling moderators to moderate anything that is questionable. Some people are used to that, but I've always pushed that a good moderator isn't necessarily one who knows when to moderate, but when not to moderate. thumb.gif

Over-moderation was actually the reason for a number of the mod-related complaints at the time when this thread was posted, and arguably is related to some of the replies here.

If there's a specific problem, or if something needs to be moderated that isn't entirely obvious (such as a reply to a faction-specific thread), simply post about it here. This forum is purposely very close to the moderator forum, so mods will see it. Just use a specific title, not like "Problem", but instead like "Topic Needs Closure". yes.gif

I still get a kick out of people that say we need more mods. If anything we need less mods.
I'm not saying that we should demote people (that would cause way too much conflict), but that we should wait until more of them leave.
(and also de-mod mods that haven't been here for 1.5 years as well)

Long-inactive mods will be de-modded, but for damage control it will happen when more yellow names are needed.

Okay.

An idea I got off another forum:

When mods want to be de-modded or inactive, we could have another user group called "Retired/Inactive Mods" and if they want their job back, we could move them back to being a mod. thumb.gif

Yeah, the idea's been thrown around a bit.

I rather like the sound of "Moderator Emeritus" myself.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

Yeah, that kind of fits CurvedSpace. Let's people know we didn't forget about the stuff they did in the past.
