Waiting a few years would be economic suicide. The Wii and the 360 can both easily outperform the Ps2, once the games coming out for these systems hit second-generation we're going to be seeing stuff you couldn't dream about on the current-gen consoles. Consoles have a decidely finite lifespan, particularly when the competition is so fierce. Nobody would be interested in dated-looking Playstation 2 titles once we've come to accept the next-gen consoles as 'normal'.
I think the price is only hurting themselves, though. Much of the reason they've done so well in the past is by capturing a lot of the mainstream audience, especially with gimmicks like Eyetoy or Singstar. Those people aren't going to be willing to pay so much for a console they'll only use occasionally, they're probably going to be more attracted to the unconventional and cheaper Nintendo Wii. Sony are still likely to have a decent number of slightly more devoted gamers interested in their system, but they'll lose the market dominance they've been enjoying for the last decade.

I'm leaning towards buying a Wii now, since I barely play with consoles now, and would only get a PS3 for MGS and GTA, but GTA is coming out on other platforms now, when it used to be PS exclusive. Plus, the Wii is cheaper and has the cool controllers

My advice is ppl shouldnt buy a ps3 wen it first comes out. It is best to wait a year. Look wat happen wen the Ps2 come out. They had problems ppl had to return them. Look wat happen to Xbox 360 same thing happened. They didnt fully test the systems to its full extent. If u wanna cant wait a year after it comes out dont b mad wen u get a system failure. LOL u have seen it happen b4.

One of my friends thats almost in Collage works at Publix baging stoff for people and is gunna buy the PS3 when it comes out. Hopfully I will get to come to his house on that day

Yeah, closing a topic because of differing opinions seems a bit silly. 
The ps3 will eventually get cheaper, but from what I've heard it's more expensive to manufacture than the other two. Now companies never make much money (if any) from the console itself, but Sony aren't going to decrease the price of the console too much if they're going to make a loss on it.
