I went on to see if I got a present yet. Sure enough, I had one waiting for me. After 10 literal minutes of lag, I finally got to open it! It was a temple guardian dog thingy!!! I hope its worth something!
Once I get my new comp hooked up to the internet, I'll actually be able to play Factions! This comp can't cut it, so I haven't been able to play in ages. I sure do miss GW!

Sounds like a Hydra.
When you double-click them outside of an outpost, they follow you around. Double-click them again to make them disappear again. Mini-pets don't run out, you can use them as many times as you want. They don't really do much, but they're a bit of fun.

Each of your characters gets a mini-pet after they've been alive for 12 months, so all you have to do is wait 12 months. 
Either that or you can just go out and buy one.
