The Bible states that the earth was created in 6 days, but some people have taken the word day to be a metaphor for a much longer period of time. This would help merge creationism with evolution, bringing about an intelligent design theory. Simply put, this is wrong. It is clearly defined as a 24 hour period, not a metaphor.

I find your Bible study very interesting, Alpha, so keep it up thumb.gif . I did want to comment on what you have said here, though. In a Study Bible that I own, it states that the original Hebrew word used to describe the "days" that God created the Earth also could mean "age." When the scholars translated the Bible into Greek, then Latin, English, and so on, they chose to use the "day" usage of the word. When Genesis was originally written, the author may have wanted to express that the Earth was created in 6 ages, not literal 24-hour days.

And didn't they say that God wrote Genesis (well at least Alpha did). Two points on that:

1. If God did, he would have forseen our confusion over this matter. But why would God want to confuse us?

2. If God didn't write Genesis, how exactly could the writer have known all that? God was the only one around then, so if it wasn't a primary source then it could have been subject to human error, and therefore be incorrect.

Edit: I looked around and saw a bit of everything. Either way, I have returned to my old theory: "If you are not the guy who wrote it, then you don't get to quote it." Only he/she/it could possibly have known what he/she/it meant.

Good point TheSmile.gif .

Well, I've taken a tiny break from this, for some evil reasons. DS, my dumb cousin, and LOTGD will prevent me from updated for a bit. Be warned that I don't feel like going through the entire bible. I'd be happy if I made it to Numbers.

Also, there is a great deal of the bible that is lost, added, and fudged when translated into english. Just thought I'd bring that up.

Absolutely true. The Old Testament is best read in its original Hebrew (mostly), and the New Testment in its original Greek (mostly). Unfortunately, most people do not know either of those languages bluetongue.gif .

I have the same opinion as Alpha about Christianity: just a myth, a story. Just something used to hold science back. Did you hear about Bush's veto on stem cell funding? He'd rather have his multi-trillion dollar 'holy war' in Iraq.

I believe Bush vetoed that bill because he believes life begins at conception, not birth. This has little to do with either science or religion... it's more philosophy. Still, Bush has made a habbit of putting his religion before his country, and that makes him a horrible leader. I'm not saying everyone is evil for having religion in that priority, but when your head of state, the state comes first.

I meant that religion, generally, has held science back throughout history, though Christianity has done this more than others. Only in the last century (?) were many of the scientists in the 'Scientific Revolution' pardoned by the church for saying the earth revolves around the sun, not the other way around.

Is that what you all believe? That Christianity is all just a myth? Well, that's your personal opinion and freedom of speech and all that other stuff. One book of the Bible you should all read is Revelations, it's the very last book in the New Testament and the very last book in the entire Bible. I haven't personally read the whole thing, well yet. I'm currently only on Exodus because I just began reading the Bible about a week ago. Anyways, Revelations talks about the coming of Jesus and what will happen in the world and about the Anti-Christ. Or if that doesn't change your mind, try reading "Left Behind" the series. Anyways as you probably can tell, I am a Christian and it's my job as well as other Christians, to tell people about the Lord. If this changes the mind of one person, which I doubt will happen, I'll be happy and have done part of my job.

Thanks. If I ever go camping, I'll take 'Revelations' along to read scary stories around a campfire.

Well if your not Christian, it is in a way kinda "scary." After everyone's gone and you're left behind, it will be 7 years of hell, literally. Possible World War III. But I'm really not going to tell you what WILL happen, you'll have to read that for yourself, cuz I really don't feel like preaching to a bunch of people who won't even consider that Jesus Christ is real, AND he IS. And then there's this Anti-Christ guy who seems all nice and perfect, who will decive((probably spelled wrong)) everyone, or will try to. And then the whole 666 thing, that's one thing you don't want to be marked with. But yeah w/e.

If some random guy in prison had a crazy dream and wrote it down, would you believe every detail of it? Would you go around preaching it as a fact without even a hint of corroborating evidence? Revelations is just that. It was a doomsday story annexed to the bible by a bunch of corrupt politicians through bribes, blackmail, and murder. If the bible was handed to us by some spreme being, I could understand people believing in it, but the actual way the bible came into existance makes me wonder how blind people can be.

Well don't then. I'm not stopping you. bluetongue.gif

And as I said, I'm sure Christ was a real person, like all the other legendary people, but I doubt the Bible is an accurate recount of the events surrounding his life. I believe the most logical explanation for Christ's miracles is that he was a very good con man. As for Revelations, to once again quote that most fabulous site, Exit Mundi, I shall point you in the direction of http://www.exitmundi.nl/bijbel.htm .

gee this is an interesting topic.... before I say anything, I'm wondering, what version/translation of the Bible are you using, and try to use quotes when replying to verses. I will post again about this, but right now I am in Maths and we only have 10min left which means I don't really have time to get into a discussion... biglaugh.gif

This is actually quite interesting. I have to say that I am a Christian and do believe a lot of this just based on faith but I am not going to debunk anything that you say.

Good luck on getting through Numbers. Of all the bboks I've read Numbers and Leviticus were the worst and most boring. On the other hand the other 3 books of law (Genesis, Exodus, and Deuteronomy) were the most interesting books to read.

you can find em' here and here oh and the arbadeen bestiary is here which is good for seing biblical based views on how things worked from way back when.
