I've been receiving questions about how to set up IRC chat bots, and with my recent thread in Announcements, I figured that it would probably be a good idea to post a thread devoted to them.

IRC bots (like R2-D4) can be easy or difficult to set up. There are many free pre-made bots that you can use, and many modules (including ones that plug directly into mIRC) that can increase their functionality. It's also possible with some programming knowledge to create your own bots.

You can do this with basically any PC with an internet connection. No server is necessary unless you want to keep a bot available all the time.

Just one thing to remember... Be sure that your bot will /part Matrix Chat's lobby (the channel you automatically join when you connect to their network).
