Interesting stuff. From memory I don't think I actually accessed the web that day, it's not too surprising that things were overloaded though. Although five years on there is likely more capacity, in general sites hog more bandwidth than they did, and each user will provide a higher drain on the total available bandwidth. In a situation such as that, I suspect the backbones would still be where the bottleneck happened.
