One more day with Matty left *tear* just recovering from an awful overnight bus ride. Matty's still sleeping. Currently sifting through all the photos I've taken and there are some pretty fantastic ones tbh. xD

I'm just a tech, actually. I haven't ruled out pharmacy school (still haven't chosen a career), but I'm a little apprehensive as to the health of the profession, or at least of community pharmacy (which I think I'd prefer to any other pharmacy niche, especially in a small-town/neighborhood shop). It'd be a gamble trying to predict now what things will be like by the time I'd finish my degree!
(What do you and your classmates think about this? Are MTM, immunizations, compounding, and other professional services going to be enough to keep an independent pharmacy afloat that can barely do more than break even on dispensing alone? Will pharmacists as we know them today even exist in retail a decade from now? Is there still a shortage of pharmacists, or are we headed for a shortage of pharmacist jobs? Etc etc gloom and doom)

hahaha to be honest, i'm not sure because i'm not from the states. >.<
but... IMO, i feel that pharmacies cannot just depend on retail by itself... it needs some sort of long term stability... but then again i might be wrong, because i'm so use to my own culture's pharmacy and this is just an outsider's point of view
well as a matter of fact, big cities are now OVERSATURATED with pharmacists... so it is starting to get difficult to find a job in the city. BUT, if it was like in a some what small city, there is still a need for pharmacist... but soon that will be going down as well

couple years ago, pharmacists were in high demand because of this increased need of people who are knowledgeable in drugs. someone that the community can rely on to ask for medical information on drugs
as for the retail i dont know... >.< maybe? patient-centered counseling is starting to become a big thing... so itsa possibility that it's gonna stick

MTM is huge here. I'm honestly thinking about clinical pharmacy in the hospital as I can't stand retail pharmacy (I'm a lot more patient focused and when I work as an intern all I seem to be worrying about is getting the patients' prescriptions filled in 15 minutes instead of making sure they know what they're doing..). I'm specializing in pediatric pharmacy, and I've done some shadowing... it's really nice, as you get to work amidst a whole team of health care specialists on rounds when you work on the floor in the hospital. Retail pharmacy is so huge/blinding at the moment that some don't realize there's much more that can be done.
There are still more pharmacies opening up than there are pharmacists. I agree with UE that it is harder to get a job in a city than in a more rural area. There's still a shortage, not sure for how much longer. I do know that the current pharmacist's role will still be here a decade from now, and it will be much more important. Although we cannot diagnose a patient, we offer free and easily available counseling services to any person that walks up, so as health care costs go up we'll be mini-doctors for a lot more peeps.
Sadly I don't think independent pharmacies will do too well in the upcoming years. The only way I see them doing well is in a larger city with a good patient base that personally know the pharmacist well (like their own family doctor in a sense). Without the community's help I don't think an independent pharmacy could make it very much longer.. =/
Services like compounding/MTM will always be needed, but I don't know too much about those areas. Immunizations are a small part of our job currently (only in the past 1-2 years have we been allowed to give a shot) - I'm sure that will be expanding.
