As of late, I've been looking for a good desktop background. Like, really. Good. Landscape-ish, good graphics, that sort of thing. I'd say that the majority of the wallpaper sites out there have a good image here and there, but, overall, fail to deliver any "wow-worthy" material. Just, stuff that looks really. Freakin'. Good. I mean, there are a couple of pretty darn decent places, like Caedes, but nothing that really pops out at you.

'Course, that's where Digital Blasphemy comes in.

I somehow have a feeling that this has been mentioned before, but... I just happened to stumble across the Free Gallery of Digitalblasphemy.com, and man, I'm impressed. The 20 wallpapers in the gallery are a slight sampling of the works of one Ryan Bliss. Completely digital, from scratch, I'd say each one of the pictures in the gallery is worthy of my desktop. (Which, of course, is the highest honor a desktop can get. yes.gif) Personally, I'm quite a fan of Coalescence, Endless Blue, Arctica, and The Overseer. No wonder this guy makes wallpapers for a living! (He's got over 600 of them available for members.)

Of course, this piqued my curiosity, and I went a-searchin'. I also happened to stumble across a second site... Visionary - Places. (3dSceneries.com) It is a German website, which is pretty annoying, but I found some ridiculously photo-realistic stuff in there. The creator of the site, Marcus Gann, uses a program called Terragen to create some incredible landscapes. The link I gave redirects to his "Galerie". On the navigation bar on the left, you'll notice 25 pages under the "Terragen" category. Most of these links seem to work... And in these galleries, you can find some truly stunning works. I'll admit, I don't love every single one of his works, but some of these are pure genious. thumb.gif A couple of examples should help you see what I mean: Birds in the Trees, The Alps, (and The Alps 2) Nordlicht, and Light On the Horizon.

They really are something to look at... especially knowing that this is all 100% digital.

Well, just thought I should share that. icon_sweatdrop.gif Man, I wrote way too much.

So, anyone else have any interesting digital art sites?

It's art. It's a digital image. Therefore, it is digital art.

...grnwink.gif

No, really, define "digital." If I take a painting and scan it into my computer, is it digital art? It was created by non-digital means, but it now exists as a digital image. Similarly, if I make some cool design using nothing but Photoshop and without working from any source images, then send it to my inkjet printer, is it digital art? It was created digitally, but now it exists on a sheet of wood pulp.

Anyhoo...

Caedes looks like it has some cool stuff. Digital Blasphemy won't load for me; though the examples you posted work fine (and they are quite nice indeed).

My backgrounds are mostly photographs... a lot are by DaddyB of Visions Fantastic; he takes thoroughly awesome photos at and of Disneyland and posts many of them at wallpaper-worthy resolution (his updates are "on hiatus" for now, though... they were supposed to start again last month...). The rest are mostly taken by myself and my friends. (Gallery. Yes, the site is slow and sucks; get over it; I'm working on it. Yes, I know there are only a few available (to you grnwink.gif) at high resolutions. I'm working on that too. And yes, Bigbro, I know the RSS feed is broken; actually, I think it's turned off entirely right now. I'm working on it. bluetongue.gif) I also have in rotation a few wallpapers from Sea Notes.

EDIT: Digital Blasphemy works now. Awesomeness. Downloaded a bunch. bluetongue.gif
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

Well, if you like Digital Blasphemy, you may like Dark Project. Has wallpapers, like Primal, CoolBlue and Embyronic. Also has icons, splahes (like mini wallpaper kinda thingys) and some other stuff.

And as for programs good for this sort of thing, there's a program called Maya, which was used in Shrek, along with dozens of other special effects movies and games. Costs an absolute fortune, though. Absolute fortune as in, it'll set you back somewhere between $1,999 and $6,999 depending on the version o_O

Feed the plushie!
(Rayquaza plushie? WTF? It doesn't look anything like the other plushies!)

Through our bleeding we are one.

Yeah... I really had no idea exactly how to phrase what I was trying to say, not to mention that I wrote it on a random burst of thought... What I'd try to narrow it down to is a (3d? Not sure if that would be included.) landscape or abstract rendering that's created, digitally, from scratch. Or something like that. Sorry for being so vague. I'm just evil like that. indifferent.gif

Ooh, cool-ness. Probably not the sort of stuff I'd personally put as my desktop background - I'm looking for more towards photo-realistic landscapes and such, but those are definitely up there with the ones I showed. Nice find.

Digital Blasphemy sure is awesome bluetongue.gif Been using some of their wallpapers for aages =P Buuut, i've recently i've been using photo landscapes instead.

*wubs the internet*

Btw, the word you're looking for is probably 'Computer-generated' or '3D-rendered' or something vaguely akin to that.

Cool, thanks for the links. I was using a Digital Blasphemy one for quite a while, they're pretty cool. I really like some of the Dark Project stuff, but in this day and age who has their resolution set to 800x600? icon_sweatdrop.gif
