1. A TV show, Firefly, which has a small but dedicated cult following, is cancelled prematurely.
2. Firefly DVD sales look promising, so Universal goes ahead with a movie, Serenity, based on the series.
3. Fans are encouraged by Universal to participate in "viral marketing" for the film (i.e. tell their friends about it, make their own bumper stickers and t-shirts, etc.).
4. Universal sues fans for merchandise licensing fees.
5. Fans bill Universal for their marketing service.

They want money from the fans in general?
"Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."
