It seems to me that some of the forums have either been stealthily moved into another forum so that i cannot find them or they have been removed altogether.

such as, as i think it was called, the role-play forum. where has it gone? i can't find it. has it possibly been removed becuase it was inactive?

Some of the forums were merged or archived during the past few months. All of the Hosted Forums were archived, because they were out long after they were supposed to be removed in the first place. I'm not sure that many realize this, but they were actually given as rewards for contests, and were intended to be temporary forums of the winner's design. They were all in the same category which now exists here.

I'm not sure that more will be given unless our activity goes up significantly, because they overlapped with our primary forums. They also caused confusion because members considered them official, to the point where topics related to them were said to be off-topic if posted in any other forum (while they really weren't off-topic).

It's not a problem though, I understand why a member would be confused.

For those really into roleplaying, maybe they should check out DarkStorm. For those who are more casual, maybe we can vote on allowing roleplay threads in the Cafeteria.
