Check out any Oz news site, or even google news will do. Have a look around for an article that mentions a stabbing. If you can't find one, do a news search on 'la trobe', that'll help something turn up. Long story short, a woman was stabbed at La Trobe University's library, in Bundoora.
I was grabbing a straw from the almost-next-door cafe at the time, going back inside the building I'd come from just in time to miss the evacuation of the library.
Heard about it via the uni rumour mill not quite two hours after the event. Didn't believe it at first, understandably (or so I think), but...somehow, the channel 9 chopper in the sky above kinda gave away that it really had happened. Went to the library after my next lecture had finished, and wandered over to the library to see what it was like. There was a mass of students, waiting for the library to reopen. Most of the media folks had packed up and left by the time I got there, so there was only the occasional camera around.
The interesting thing is that normally at that time I would have been in the library myself. Today was the only day of semester I haven't gone to the library during that break. Reason for that'll be in my blog when I can be bothered doing an entry about it.
Not nice to think that something like this could happen.

That's not a good place to stab somebody..
Not that any place, but a library? Come on, some signs of decency would be nice..

I'm wondering...
It may have been premeditated. A library is [strategically] the best place for a murder. It's quiet, some people sleep, and everyone minds their own business. A stabbing can be virtually silent, so maybe someone had it in for her.

If you think that a university's library is quiet, I'm sorry to say you'd be completely wrong. At least in the case of La Trobe. The library goes over three floors, and there's never less than a few hundred people in there at any given time (except after about 5ish, when most people are starting to head home). Given that it happened at the start of the library's 'busy time', it would have been nothing like quiet. As for it being premeditated, given that the woman who was arrested (and charged, without trying for bail - says to me she's guilty as sin) apparently has been charged for violence-related offences before now, it could have been premeditated, but was just as likely to have simply been a random attack.
Last I heard, the woman who was attacked is in a serious but stable condition, so hopefully she'll pull through alright.

Oh. I figured it was more like our community college library. I've only seen it a few times, but it's never crowded. Thankfully, I don't think I'll be going to our community college. It's for the arts... *bleh*

Scary to hear. Glad you were in the right place at the right time. Out of there. And good for the lady to be stable. Hopefully she'll be alright.
And yes, it's rather nerve racking to have so much school violence take place recently. There's been alot around my area, too.

Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
