I've just completed tracing my family's genealogy (for the most part). If you haven't done it before, it's really fun to do. You learn a lot! Some good sites to start on are Ancestry and Rootsweb. Ancestry is the best site for genealogy, and they offer a 14-day free trial. That's plenty enough time to trace your family history.

Now, the question is, what is your heritage? For those of you who don't know, look it up! Ask parents, grandparents, uncles, etc. You'd be surprised how much they know. If you want to dig deeper, then check out some of the sites I've listed above.

Since I am an American, I have quite a few cultures mixed up inside of me bluetongue.gif . I am mostly German, Welsh, English, and Slovakian. I also have trace amounts of Irish (Northern Ireland included), Scottish, and Swiss ancestry. My closest link back to Europe is through my great-grandmother, who was born in Ynyshir, Glamorgan, Wales. My German heritage is apparent through my physical appearance and last name.

I might try it out soon. As far as I know, I'm mostly English but some German.

But then again I haven't really researched so I may be wrong bluetongue.gif

Very neat! Most wouldn't think it, but we're all pretty diverse when you go way back bluetongue.gif .

I have too common a name for it to really be traced back to anywhere specific.

But I can tell you that my closest link to anywhere outside of America is my great-great-grandpa or something like that. o.O

Well, I haven't used any sites, but I do have a vague idea of where some of my family came from.
England (apparently someone with my last name killed a Welsh noble for England)
Switzerland (still have contact with the ancestors of those who stayed)
Norse (single mention)
Slav (can't be more specific)
Native American (if so, it's been a loong time)
German (Hessians)

I know I trace back to Scots somehow or another.
But once it gets there, the stories scatter and it's hard to recall most of it.

I know that my Great great granddad on my fathers side was part of a gang of horse thieves in Mississippi way back when. And he was run out of town for killing a man, where he hauled tail over to Louisiana. That's where it gets mixed.

I've never tried to search past that. That was interesting enough for me. bluetongue.gif I'll look into it this evening, though.
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be "The One".
Born to bear and read to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see.

I think you mean descendants. If you are in contact with your ancestors, then you might want to talk to your psychiatrist... bluetongue.gif

Very interesting, Res! Unfortunately, family stories are often yarns, as I've found. My grandfather claimed that his grandfather was Native American, but I seriously doubt it. All signs point to him as primarily English.

My six-great-grandfather, William Coltrin, has an interesting story. William was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1765. He served in the 4th Connecticut Regiment during the American Revolution. He also served later in the War of 1812. Around 1819, he and his family set off to Indiana on a flatboat. They started too late, because they were stuck all winter in the Ohio River. The next spring, they finally made it to Terre Haute. He staked a claim in Lost Creek Township, west of town. They farmed the land and built their house there. He died only a year later, in 1820.

Here's where it gets interesting. I found the location of the Coltrin family cemetery on the Internet. Last weekend, my sister, her friend, and my best friend set out to find the cemetery. Although our coordinates were incorrect, I finally managed to find the cemetery. Most of the headstones' inscriptions were worn away, but I could still make out most names and dates. William's headstone (which was replaced by the Daughters of the American Revolution) was buried under leaves. I'll have to come back to the cemetery in the spring after the leaves decompose TheSmile.gif .
