From CNN.com
QUOTE
Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto and Ottawa, Canada. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

State officials said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid was overloaded. The grid provides power for New York and stretches into Canada. The officials said the outage is a natural occurrence and not related to terrorism.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street was shut down. All area airports and the Long Island Railroad were also affected.

The Federal Aviation Administration grounded planes at all three New York area airports because the blackout affected security screening facilities. The FAA reported planes also were grounded at the Toronto airport. The airports were operating on backup power, officials said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg confirmed the outage was not related to terrorism or an accident.

"The good news is, Con Ed's facilities have shut down automatically, which they're programmed to do," he said. "No damage was done to the Con-Ed facility."

Bloomberg said it was unknown how long the outage may last.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

"We are going to have a situation where people are going to have to walk a long distance. They need to be careful," Bloomberg said. "Our advice is to go home, open up your windows, drink a lot of liquids."

I know, I heard. Here's an article from ABC.com:

QUOTE
N E W  Y O R K, Aug. 14— A power outage struck several cities in the Northeast and eastern Canada this afternoon, wreaking havoc at intersections as traffic lights went out and trapping thousands of people in New York City's stalled subways.

The Department of Homeland Security said there was no indication that terrorism was involved.

At about 3:45 p.m. ET, people in New York City, Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio, Albany, N.Y., Detroit, and parts of New Jersey reported power outages. In Canada, Toronto and Ontario also suffered outages. Most cell phone service was also affected.

No outages were reported in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Boston or Chicago.

There were no power outages reported in the West Coast. Power company officials said there was no irregular activity in their power grid.

In the ABCNEWS.com newsroom in Manhattan, most of the lights and the televisions suddenly went off. At the AOL Time Warner offices in midtown Manhattan, employees sat in the dark and listened to an overhead announcement that told them they could leave the building if they so desired, an employee said.

There was a report of fire at the Con Edison plant in New York, but that has not been confirmed. New York City police officials told ABCNEWS.com they were puzzled and did not know what was going on or the source of the power outage. Police spokeswoman Natasha Sidhari said lights were out throughout New York Police Department headquarters.

The New York Port Authority said there was no train or subway service in the city. Thousands of people were believed to be stuck in stopped subway cars with no air conditioning.

The power went out on a hot, humid day when most residents wanted air conditioning. In New York's Central Park, it was a sultry 88 degrees. It was 87 degrees in Detroit and Cleveland at 4:30 p.m. ET, and 81 degrees in Toronto.

I wonder why this happened? I'll bet $10 they have the answer by tomorrow bluetongue.gif

Ouch I hope they don't die... I've been seeing reports from France that the Police there think that about 3000 people have died from heat over there. I hope no one dies in those subways, or anywhere else for that matter.

They didn't time the generators correctly, maybe?
It takes several hours to get a powerstation going, they have people working out how much power will be needed. For example, they look at the TV guide, when theres a advert break in Coranation Street they make sure they have extra powerstations on, ready for the rise in kettle usage.
If they have too many on, they lose money, as electricity cant be stored for even a split second.
If they dont have enough, you get brown-outs.

So they might have not just turned enough on.

Other than Canada, it was mainly NorthEastern U.S. (For some reason). But I did hear that Ohio was affected... Anyway, Manhatten's still down.

I, personally live 50 miles from NYC. At 4 o clock, when the blackouts happened in New York, my house got a brown out, then a 1 second black out. Then my friend (who is crazy about current events) called me and shouted "Garrett! Turn on the news! Quick! The power is out in all major cities! We dont think it's a terror attack. Ok, bye" then he hung up.

Boy, friends are weird...

Interestingly, in World History a few days ago we were discussing when this happened in the '60s and how we can use history to "learn from our mistakes," lmao. How rare.

Mom is (and I quote her) "hot and cranky" about how Bush responded within hours to this, even though it will be over well within the week... yet when Cali had its energy crisis (and we're still conserving!), he didn't give a flying rat's bottom. In addition, Cali's crisis got little 15-second blips on the news... this made networks cancel shows for "breaking news." I understand what NY's been through, but this is ridiculous! It should have been over when it was determined not to be terrorist-related.

We're not trying to downplay this or anything... just making a point about the utter stupidity of politics.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.
