Since this is the main forum for the Arbiters, and since most of our organized factions exist in MMOGs, it would probably be useful to have a guide for acronyms and common terms. thumb.gif

This isn't really for general internet acronyms and terms, but those which pertain to games. We're probably all familiar with these, but sometimes a person comes along who doesn't know them, so maybe this could be useful. These are all considered standard, even if they're not all applicable to every game.

*******************************

Add: A MOB that joins a battle that is already happening. This is usually not intended by a player or group.

AFK: Away from keyboard

Aggro: A verb for a MOB deciding to attack a player.

Assist: Attacking another player's target (usually the MT's target in a group).

Casual: Games with low risk, or guilds that don't push themselves very hard.

Corpse Run: Running back to your character's corpse to recover items and/or experience, in games that have such a mechanic.

Ding: Sometimes said when one's character gains a level. To my knowledge, the term originally comes from EverQuest and the unusual sound it makes when you gain a level.

DoT: Damage over time. This usually involves abilities which apply damage over intervals of time.

DPS: Damage per second. Sometimes a group role is also called "DPS" if someone specializes in causing physical damage at an expense to defensive capabilities (typical for bow classes, rogue classes, and sometimes a particular fighter class).

Emote: Command that either forces one's character to do some animation, or provides action text in the chat.

Encounter: A group of linked enemies.

Hardcore: Games with high risk, or guilds that are driven to raid and/or get into otherwise optional PvP.

Hate: An invisible point scale that determines who a MOB attacks. This is the same as threat.

Hybrid: A type of character that favors versatility.

INC: Incoming enemy. This is usually said to alert your group.

Instance: A private copy of a zone. This is usually done to either prevent kill stealing, or to provide scripted content that somehow affects the zone itself.

LFG: Looking for group.

LFM: [Group] Looking for more. Sometimes a number is used to specify how many spots are left (such as LF2M).

Link: Sending an item link in chat, allowing others to see the item. This isn't possible in some games.

Macro: Custom commands that some MMOGs allow you to make.

Mez: Mesmerize ability. This usually causes a MOB to stop attacking.

MOB: Mobile object (enemy NPC). This is sometimes confused with a group of enemies, as it would imply as an English word. In truth, it's standard for "MOB" to refer to a single enemy. It used to refer to any server-controlled entity that moved, but that definition isn't really used anymore.

MT: Main tank. This is often a mitigation-centered fighter who tries to keep damage away from more vulnerable allies.

NPC: Non-player character. This refers to any server-controlled entity, including friendly characters as well as enemies.

Nuke: A spell that causes sudden, high damage.

OT: Off tank. A fighter who supports the main tank. This is often a fighter who is balanced between DPS and mitigation, who will grab any MOBs that break from the MT. This is usually a role for raids, but sometimes you'll have one in a smaller group if there's an extra fighter.

PC: Player character.

Pull: Intentionally cause a MOB or encounter to attack you.

PvE: Player vs. environment (NPCs).

PvP: Player vs. player.

Raid: A group of groups, either with the intention to take down epic-level adversaries, or with the intention to overwhelm others in PvP. Typically raids consist of anywhere from 12 to 36 players, but obviously there are exceptions.

Rez: Resurrection.

Specialist: A type of character that focuses on one specific strength.

Tank: A character that focuses on damage mitigation.

Threat: An invisible point scale that determines who a MOB attacks. This is the same as hate.

Train: In some games without flagged encounters, this is often a zone-wide yell to alert anyone at the zone line that one's trying to escape and that a large encounter is following. The purpose is to prevent anyone at the zone line from being killed once the player escapes. Once someone zones out, he or she is wiped from the encounter's hate list, and anyone nearby could be attacked.

Vendor Trash: Items with no real purpose, other than to sell to NPCs.

XP: Experience points

Zone: A piece of the world, which is usually by itself seamless. You typically enter a new zone whenever you see a load screen. This is also a verb for the transition between zones (often a load screen).

Zone Line: The edge of a zone, beyond which you'll have to load a new area.

Hybrid: A type of character that favors versatility.

In RS, generally a PvP charectar that uses all three attack types (Range, Mage and Melee) in the same fight.
