So, the premise for this trivia is really simple. We'll start by posting just the name of some object, person, place, whatever iyou can think of (Nothing too silly, please). The next poster will post some interesting fact or current/historical event that strongly involves the word used. Then they post another word. It's a fun simple game meant to just let everyone learn something random and interesting, and looking up answers is not a problem, because it just means we all benefit even more. (:

Example: Panda

The average gestation period for a giant panda is anywhere between 90-160 days.

See, simple. (: Now to start:

Philips' plan for a CD with a 11.5cm diameter had to be changed when Sony insisted that a disc must hold all of Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

The longest recording of the symphony in record label Polygram's archive was 74 minutes and so the CD size was increased to 12cm diameter to accommodate the extra data.

In the central core of a neutron star there are no stable atoms or nuclei; only elementary particles can survive the extreme conditions of pressure and temperature.

The name reminded me of some of the medical experiments performed on people captured by the Nazis, particularly the one where a person's eyes were injected with blue dye (now (if not then) known to be toxic, if I recall) to see if peoples eyes could be artificially recolored.

A molecule that demonstrates Wave Particle Duality.

(Also, I seem to remember way back when hearing of plans to make some complex structures in space using this stuff, as it might be easier to form them there. But that may have been another substance.)

The steradian was formerly an SI supplementary unit, but this category was abolished from the SI in 1995 and the steradian is now considered an SI derived unit.

Observations determined the mass of Sagittarius A* to be about 3.7 million solar masses within a volume with radius no larger than 6.25 light-hours (45 AU) or about 4.2 billion miles. For comparison, Pluto orbits our Sun at a distance of 5.51 light-hours or 3.7 billion miles.

Émile Gentil (4 April 1866 - 30 March 1914) was a French colonial administrator, naval officer, and colonial military leader.

Born at Volmunster in the department of Moselle, he later attended the École Navale, the school that formed French naval officers. As an ensign, he was assigned to conduct hydrographic soundings along the Gabonese coast from 1890 to 1892. In 1892 he joined the colonial administration in Gambon.

Invented to screw with people's minds.

The "sphere" would be a system of orbiting solar power satellites meant to completely encompass a star and capture most or all of its entire energy output. Dyson speculated that such structures would be the logical consequence of the long-term survival of technological civilizations, and proposed that searching for evidence of the existence of such structures might lead to the detection of advanced intelligent extraterrestrial life.
