Definitions of dark energy on the Web:

* Form of energy that is gravitationally repulsive, due to a negative effective pressure. Dark energy is spread almost uniformly throughout space ...

* A hypothetical type of energy that fills the empty space. Together with dark matter they form about 75% of the matter/energy of the universe.

* recently discovered part of the energy-mass budget of the Universe. An anti-gravity of sort, dark energy began to overwhelm matter about 7 billion years ago. Since that time, Universe expansion pace is progressively accelerating. Dark energy represents 75 percent of the Universe's energy-mass budget

* In physical cosmology, dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy that permeates all of space and has strong negative pressure. According to the Theory of Relativity, the effect of such a negative pressure is qualitatively similar to a force acting in opposition to gravity at large scales. ...

* An energy causing the acceleration of the expansion of the universe, detectable through its gravitational effects.

If it fills an empty space, isn't it essentially 'nothing'?
Something has to exist in all places. I believe that theoretically, it could be behind the vacuum of space.

However, I disagree with the whole "universal expansion" theory in some ways. It's hard to define exactly what I think. I believe that the universe is exactly as it should be, and as such Infinite. I also don't think we can define how much of the universe actually exists, as it knows no bounds (As far as I think).

Whatever dark matter is, we have a strong chance to find out exactly how it's made when the Large Hadron Collider fires up in May. The Higgs Boson will be the end of us.
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be "The One".
Born to bear and read to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see.

Nothing is nothing. Having a word for it, even referring to nothing as "it" is a logical fallacy, turning "nothing" into a thing. The human mind cannot grasp "nothing," as the only conceptions we have are all somethings. If you want to break this rule anyway, the best way of thinking about it is to say "nothing nonexists." If Dark Energy exists, it is certainly not nothing.

Coincidentally, my 20th century philosophy term paper was called "On Nothing." Philosophy's my major. bluetongue.gif

I considered turning in a blank page with just the title to be witty, but didn't end up doing that. I should have.

Like the thing about the question asking to define courage or whatever and someone turning in a paper just saying "This is courage." xD

actually Res, the universe is expanding, and its expansion is accelerating. this has been proven using measurements taken from distant supernovae.

To say "the universe is expanding" is misleading. It is more accurate to say "the contents of the universe are drifting farther apart from each other." What is on the edge of the universe? No such thing as the "edge of the universe." Assuming you'd simply be talking about whatever particle is furthest away from the very center, as far as we know, past that particle, there is empty space forever, and empty space is still a part of the universe.
