Consider it a hypothetical question...

If we are not the cause of global warming, should we still try to stop the cycle?

It depends on whether or not the cycle is beneficial to us.

We could slow it down at best, not stop it.

The anthropic principle does not extend into the future. There is no guarantee that the earth will continue to support a comfortable life for humans. Even if the change is a natural one, it can still be devastating. We need to do what we can to give ourselves a stable environment in which to live.

If it's natural, it's still likely that we can do something about it. If we can't deal with the actual cause, we can find ways to affect something else to keep the environment balanced. If we introduce a gradual change, it's relatively safe because we will have time to stop if it has unintended consequences. If for some reason we can't fix it yet, it's likely that we will be able to deal with it soon if enough money is put into a solution.

I believe global warming is caused by the magentic poles rotating. becasue (if i can recall my yr 12 physics) over a few billion years the magnetic poles rotate from north to south. some believe this is the cause of previous ice ages and climate change, and is also a possible cause for the exticintion of dinosaurs. Our Use of Cars and Green house gas emissions may of accelerated the change. but it would still happen. i agree with aaron we could slow it back down but it would still happen.

That's another problem is money. I think if we were to try to "stop" or "slow" this process ( which is inevitable in my opinion ) we would as a world community need to put all of our minds together and stop creating nuclear weapons to destroy eachother, stop shooting eachother, argueing, and being self-centered. Which won't happen. We're basically screwed if global warming is truely an extreme threat to the human existence.

I also think the only person that could possibly save us is Bono.

One volcanic eruption releases more carbon dioxide than all the cars in the past 50 years have caused.

This is SO much friendlier than the debate I started on Earth Day. Good Job! thumb.gif

If its natural, we shouldnt try to stop it. It might just be like trying to stop the sun from rising; we cant do anything about it.

I love people who get their "facts" from Rush Limbaugh.

The volcano releases more methane than the last fifty years of human activity.

That is also the argument for the cow farts.

Methane, while it is a greenhouse gas, is not the issue with humans, as we don't release nearly as much as nature does.

CO2 is the issue, and makes up a much higher percentage of greenhouse gases released by the planet.

Like the people who get their "facts" from Al Gore movies? Yea, I bet that someone (Al) who makes money off people being scared of global warming is going to present all the "facts" in their propogan- *AHEM*- movies...

At least he's done some research and isn't just spouting his mouth off.

It's also unwise of you to assume that every single environmentalist believes Gore to be absolutely correct. We all know that correlation doesn't imply causation, which is why the issue still exists in the first place.
