Shrinking a Partition (Vista) The nightmare lives on... >.<

I am running Windows Vista Home Edition SP1 on my machine, with user account control disabled, and running all programs mentioned here as administrator. thumb.gif

The problem started when I first realized I really needed to partition my drive. I first tried Vista's Disk Manager. It seemed to think there was no space on the drive - so I followed a guide and defragged my drive. It worked, well, kinda.

"Access is denied."

Was all I got after selecting C:\, entering an amount to shrink and hitting that big 'Shrink' button.

So, yet again I turned to the internet and used diskpart.exe. It all went fine, I selected the drive, the volume, and amount to partition..and waited. indifferent.gif

"Diskpart.exe has encountered an error - access is denied. Please view your System Event Log for details."

Please help me. screama.gif

You see, Vista has administrator, and then it has the real administrator that you have to sacrifice a goat to Microsoft to obtain access to.
I can't remember how to get to it. Look it up, try it, and report your findings.


Why are you re-partitioning anyways?

I heard about that crap lol, 'higher' administrator or something, I'll look into it.

Res, the whole reason I'm doing this is to TAKE OFF Vista, but keep all of my pronzor err, documents.

There're a few Linux-based "system rescue" LiveCDs floating around loaded up with various utilities including a partitioner... my memory fails me in pointing out a specific one, but that's probably your best bet. If Vista isn't letting you, bypass Vista.

Yeah... I originally tried using Ubuntu's Wubi installer - but apparently I don't have permission to use that. In the end I'm probably just going to give up and put up with Vista.

Even running the "secret" xD administrator account you'll need higher privileges and that's where ctrl + shift + enter comes in to play. TheSmile.gif

Well, that'd be because Wubi is the Windows-based Ubuntu Installer... and since you're running it from within Windows, you're still subject to Windows enforcing its permissiony stuff on you.

Sooo you're trying to remove Vista but keep all of your personal files? What OS are you planning to replace it with?

Easiest way is to just grab the ubuntu-restricted-extras package which includes stuff like Flash, Java, the mp3 codec... and Microsoft TrueType fonts. Stuff that got left out of the standard install due to legal issues.

CODE
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
at the terminal. You can also find it in Synaptic, or under Add/Remove Applications (if you select Show All Applications) at the top.
