So my desktop currently has an Athlon 64 3700+ "San Diego" (single-core 2.2 GHz).

I also have a second box that's supposedly an all-purpose server (LAMP plus local file/print sharing). However, the main site it housed (Galería de los Tres Caballeros) is dead (long live the Caballeros though!), and my family never bothered using it to store files, and I'm moving out soon anyway. So it can go sit in a storage unit as far as I'm concerned.

Now, this "server" uses an Athlon 64 X2 3600+ "Brisbane" (dual-core 1.9 GHz). Parts were bought a year or two after the latest major upgrade to my desktop (well-documented on these very forums), and at the time, the decision was made to put the new processor/mobo in the server computer rather than my desktop because the server would be multi-tasking while my desktop would be gaming. Makes sense enough.

But now the server's sitting unused, and my desktop is used for everything BUT gaming pretty much. Typically at the minimum, I've got Photoshop, Firefox, and foobar2000 open. Plus other stuff. So I was thinking, why not go ahead and swap it out? I'd be seeing a performance boost for day-to-day use, yeah? And I can keep my graphics card so it's not like I'm in for a major hit if I do decide to fire up a game.

And since I'm not super knowledgable of the modern* computing world I figure I'd double-check with you guys before I spend a day swapping everything out. bluetongue.gif

*"modern" in the sense that my gear is a couple years old. Or older in some cases.

There should be a performance boost with the dual-core. I have the same processor in my desktop and it works great with games.

IIRC they're different sockets so that's not an option.

Do you know if all your current hardware like RAM and GPU will work with the other motherboard?

Hee, sounds like I'll be adding this to my list of day-off projects. Thanks thumb.gif
