Are we to just let it die like this?

Surely someone can contact Cspace and get admin access to beef up the spam blocking/security. I wouldn't mind taking part in a cleanup effort if anyone else is interested either.

Personally I think with just a little effort we could get DoA going in GW2, though if it turns out we're going completely out of the loop we could at least make this a dignified sanctuary to which we can return and reflect/have laughs/nostalgia.

Dammit, I keep looking for buttons to "Like" posts. But alas.

Yeah though. We can brainstorm and figure exactly what needs to do security wise, and go on a month long crusade to can a ton of the spam and what not, and try to implement a better sort of advertisment-proofer. I don't post often at all. But I'm still here every day. If I knew there were some other folks on board to make a systematic sweep of boards and such of all bullcrap ads, I'd go for it. It's just a bit overwhelming to tackle it all at once alone.
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be "The One".
Born to bear and read to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see.

I can help around the Insanity Board, at least. EDIT: Aww, no spam there. I was looking forward to flexing my mod-muscle.

Getting momentum going around here will be difficult, but, I suppose, not impossible. We'd be starting with a veeeery small snowball.

Haven't heard from Desp/Cspace since the big PM-chain a while back (how long ago was that? EDIT: Wow, more than a year). I wonder how much he keeps an eye on things around here? And how much does this site cost to host?

I'm certainly willing to pitch in my share. The core of this community is the people who are here every day (that's not me -- I pop on every now and again, but I'm willing to commit to more), but the thing that will really get activity going, I think, is gaming. GW2 would be a good spot to break into, but I think the ol' site would need a bit of a clean-up first. As a new person dropping in, there's a lot of old fossils that would probably be confusing. If arenanet keeps their model of no subscription fees, I'm almost definitely going to buy it.

I still play WoW. I'm on every day. It's difficult to do any major stuff without everyone being on the same realm (I'm reluctant to transfer, my RL friends are on my server), but with the new features for cross-realm raiding and such, combined with openraid.us, we could probably get something going. And there's always rerolls. That's if anyone else plays. I don't really have the time or energy to lead a guild, but I'm definitely willing to help.

Short, positive answer: We must have patience. GW2, and the new Defenders of Aderon, will be our savior. We will return to Tyria with the unspoken goal of "make friends, be insane, and do whatever" as we did from SeeD's early days to its Golden Age, and as we did again in DoA the first time around. The guild's bustle of activity will jump-start (or, probably more accurately, replace) the existing community here... and everything will be fine.

And now the longer answer. It's Cynical {expletive run over by Cspace} Time, with your old pal, Phi! :thumb:

"Are we to just let it die like this?" Honestly, yeah. I'm about at that point. I agree, Mase, that the site/forums need a cleanup --- and in fact, I (and others) have offered suggestions to that effect. Specific, practical suggestions. There are a couple long threads floating around filled with long, detailed discussion of the issues at hand. Nothing has been done. Nothing will be done. Whether we agree with it or not, Cspace has made his decision to stay "hands off" for now. And, as he is the only one with the access to make the necessary improvements, there is literally nothing that can be done aside from fighting the spamdrones (an endless battle I've given up on for lack of time) and trying to boost activity (a winnable, if incredibly steep, battle --- nobody wants to join a community whose only activity is "thanks for share :)").

For {expletive ninja'd by Cspace}'s sake, the "New CurvedSpace" as posted on the front page was over a year ago.

(Irony: When I pulled up the front page, the first message on the fader was "Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.")
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

Thanks for linking that post -- I hadn't seen it.

I really, really think we need to clean house, but, as strongly as I feel about it, I don't want to act contrary to Desperado's wishes. All the ideas I have really need to go through him. Is there a more up-to-date version of IPBoard to move onto? Can we trim down the interface to be a little more modern, a little more simple? The gallery, arcade, etc. are great features, but they draw attention away from the core of the site, which is simply a communications hub. The more we can simplify the site, the more we can concentrate activity in the places we need it. If we're going to wait and count on GW2, we might as well stack the deck in the meantime. Now would be the time to do any major changes, before we see an increase in traffic.

If not, then there really isn't anything but the lonely spam war. Is it possible to promote what members we do have around to make it easier for us to fight it? Seems to me that any of the olds who are still around at this point clearly care about the site and its welfare. I'd love to go hunt more spam outside the insanity board, but as it is I can't. Is Desperado the one holding the keys on that? Again, I don't want to make any move that in any way circumvents him or his wishes. This is his site.

I'm willing to do as much or as little as is requested. But I'd like to do as much as I can.

Well, registrations are closed now. There's a code we can give to people who are actually interested, but nobody is, even with GW2 apparently. (Are "we" actually round in GW2, by the way? Jealous of y'all who can play it.)

Every once in awhile a sleeper account made before the lockout shows up and spams, but that gets cleared up and banned pretty quick.
