Hey all!

We're now less than two weeks away from the headstart access, so I think it's time to start talking about which server we're planning to base ourselves on. I know a few people have other friends they're wanting to coordinate with too, so if we get it sorted out early that should help. It's worth reiterating that home server only means anything with regards to WvW, you'll still be able to do PvE and sPvP with anyone on any server.

To me the most important factors would be that the server isn't super full (to the point that people can't select it) or empty, and that there's players of a bunch of different timezones active on it. We've got a reasonable number of AU/NZ players planning to play so the latter becomes important, plus it'll tend to be the balanced servers that win WvW because they can actually hold locations overnight. Steamspur from the first two BWEs no longer exists, the third BWE3 had the people I know here and elsewhere split between Crystal Desert and the Sea of Sorrows. Both of which seemed extremely full, so my preference would be not to go through that again. Also I've heard Crystal Desert is being adopted by a lot of the Brazilian players, not really a problem but I'd prefer to settle somewhere predominantly english-speaking.

My suggestion would be Gate of Madness. A listing I saw a while back seemed to be suggesting that some of the oceanic guilds and communities that found Sea of Sorrows too full were planning to use it, so it would hopefully have a good mix of different time zones. I didn't think to check what the server populations looked like during the last few weekends or stress tests though, does anyone know how full it was? Anyone have other ideas as to where we should go?

I agree with you. We should try to find a server with a moderate, but not bloated, size. And keeping time zones in mind is important. I feel I saw a chart of server load at one point, I'll dig that up sometime soon to see if we can't make an informed decision.

So, they've released the final world list, which can be found here: https://www.guildwar...f-guild-wars-2/

Gate of Madness is a US world, which works well for me, but I cannot say how that will affect Oceanic players. I'm not entirely sure there will be a perfect mix for our player base since we are half and half, when it comes to sides of the globe. But if you guys know a better world to try and keep it balanced, I'm all ears. :)

And I couldn't find the server usage list. Looking at a few random blog posts, all I can find for GoM was that it had a regular sized load (which is good) and was a bit weak in WvW, but I suspect with the smaller server list, and things being simply a beta before, this will be irrelevant when they get a final player base settled.

There are no dedicated Oceanic servers, which is a bit of a sore point due to latency issues. By default we're routed to the NA servers, and I think we've got a significantly better internet backbone to the US than to Europe anyway.

So yeah, as you say there's no perfect solution. Sea of Sorrows is widely being designated as the main oceanic server but every beta it's been extremely full. The stuff I'm reading now is actually suggesting that Isle of Janthir is being considered as the secondary oceanic server, as well as possibly having some of the gw2 subreddit overflow and random other US-based communities and guilds. So in light of the final list of servers, that'd probably be my suggestion for now.

I've also seen a response to a support question saying that there should be a grace period for free server changes for a little while after release, to let things settle. I wouldn't rely 100% on this eventuating since there was a little bit of hedging in the answer, but it's likely we'll have the opportunity to relocate if something gets screwed up.

Oh right, I hadn't posted anything more here. About half of the people involved are on some random facebook group relating to the gw2 launch so I forgot.

For some inexplicable reason Reddit has recently decided to have Isle of Janthir as their main server choice, so it's likely to be at least as packed as any others. They've confirmed that we'll have some time to transfer worlds freely at launch, unfortunately they've also confirmed that guesting on other servers won't be available at launch. So we have some leeway to play it by ear, but it's all the more important that we try to end up on the same server as everyone we want to play with.

A couple of people I know are definitely picking Sea of Sorrows, because that's where their old GW1 guild is based. And it was pointed out to me that server populations are likely to drop off dramatically after a few weeks or months, at which point maybe an originally really full server will be at about the right activity level. Together with the temporary free transfers, this is making me think maybe we should all just try to get on SoS despite the fact that it's likely to be really packed at first. I feel a little bit selfish to keep trying to move where we're going for personal reasons though.
Does anyone have any other thoughts? Any friends that you're trying to coordinate with that are as stubborn as mine?

I definitely agree that since the server populations will drop off, that going to a bigger server may be best for now. Besides, it doesn't really affect us too much, since they fixed parties going to the same overflow. And while it may make WvW or the like a touch more difficult to enter, in the end it might be the best idea. Besides, most of my GW friends are right here, so I am okay with whatever you guys decide.

Since I'd like a strong WvW presence on our server, I say SoS sounds fine. I AM worried about all of us getting a spot on it even with the transfers. But that is a hurdle we can overcome on release.

I'm perfectly fine with Sea of Sorrows (again, forgetting about this due to the Facebook group of GW organizing stuff) since, again as it was mentioned, activity will somewhat die down and when guesting becomes an option it won't have a superly huge effect upon gameplay, aside from WvW.

I won't be online immediately upon release, as I stupidly forgot to get the actual date off (I got a week from the 26th off because I thought the timezones thing wouldn't have an impact upon the Saturday... but the release time kinda screwed that up). Thought I'd be sweet since it opened at 7pm and I finish work at 6pm, but then ANet goes and announces that the game could be opened up to three hours from the scheduled release time, so expect to see me rushing home during my breaks to try and log on and secure names and whatnot. :P

But yeah, if people are willing to wait a little bit, I can create the guild once I get home and rack up some awesome coin for it real quick. So excited!!

Sea of Sorrows it is, then.

I am super excited. I can't wait to see you guys there. :)

If it launches closer to the 'official' time then we might as well wait for you to create the guild. If it launches at the earlier end of the range, one of us could always make a guild and then set you to leader once you get on. :)

Yeah. I don't know how the timing works out for AU players (I imagine quite well, since its roughly +12 hours from PST), but I plan to reserve a spot on SoS rather quickly, even if I need to pop up from my sleep to do so. If need be, I can set it up and hand it over to you Tanny.

17:00 official timing, up to three hours earlier bringing it back to possibly 14:00. Pretty damn ideal, I'd say :D

SoS sounds good (totally independant from that fact I've been one of the ones pushing it on the facebook organisation group, I swear).

A wild Mattimeo appears.

Not long now. If you've got Curvedspace people on Facebook/IM/whatever that you know are planning to play that haven't seen any of this yet, maybe see if you can let them know what's going on. I know Star bought the game a while back, I think some of the others did too. Ari was relying on someone to let her know what server, so I'll send her off an email.

So to summarise:

Server: Sea of Sorrows.

It'll probably be full, just keep trying to make it on there. For those that can't at first the backup server will be Maguuma Jungle. Transfers should be free for at least a few days, so there should be adequate time to get it all sorted.
