I personally find Xenogears to be one of the greatest RPGs out there, and I think it provides an interesting insight on our society. For those who've played it, I'm interested in what you think of all the philosophical stuff it talked about.

Yeah, it had a rather religious plot, but I was more interested in what people thought of the things they discussed about the Zeboim era, and how its entire population was wiped out by nuclear weapons. Ironically, a 4000-year old ancient society significantly resembles the modern society of reality. To add that kind of depth to an already extremely deep plot, really makes one think about modern society and consider the ideas of modern times as if they were 4000 years ago.
On another note altogether, "Alpha Weltall", from which your handle originates, was the Gear belonging to Grahf, aka Lacan. The person "Lacan" was involved in several reincarnations over several centuries, a very religious idea. If you claim to hate all the religious stuff behind the plot of the game, why does your handle originate from it?

To what Jedi was talking about
The different buttons correspond to different attack levels. Triangle=1, Square=2, X=3. In character fighting, Triangle attacks are quite accurate, Square are a bit more powerful and a bit less accurate, and X attacks are even more powerful and less accurate. Deathblow attacks also end in X. In Gears, fuel is added to the mix. The battle system is confusing at first, but once one gets the hang of it, it's one of the funnest things out there - while in most other games, people are limited to their simple normal attacks while doing their tedious levelling up, this game's attack system allowed the player to liven things up a bit and make tedious levelling up a bit less boring.
I strongly recommend Xenogears to anyone that's interested in anything different from the norm. However, I also give a strong warning about it, as some of the content in it is of a strongly religious nature. It's rated "Mature" for a good reason, and almost didn't make it to the US. Other than that, it has an excellent storyline, motivating, long hours of gameplay, one of the best soundtracks out there, and an almost infinite amount of replay value.

The game originated in 1998 on the Playstation. Since then, the Xenogears team has left Square as the original game "did not satisfy their original objectives," and moved to another company. A prequel to the game has been released on the PS2, Xenosaga: Dur Wille Zur Macht, and other games are going to be released as part of the series, but unfortunately, I have yet to play far into Xenosaga... Anyway, you won't likely be able to find Xenogears in any store, as it's quite rare. Your best bet would probably be on EBay, which doesn't really have stable prices...
One thing I forgot to mention about the soundtrack, it was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, the same person that did the music for Chrono Trigger and later Chrono Cross. For those of you that liked the music from those games, you won't be disappointed.
Dungeons like Babel Tower weren't really boring, they were just there to make one's life ****. The experience gained from such dungeons was very helpful to one's levelling up, anyway, so it all evens out in the end. Besides, after Babel Tower is Shevat, where the game really starts moving.

The place I got it from was game stop if you have one where you live. Just go to any used game retailer. I did find one new one, but I already owned it by then. So just look in a used game retailer because you won't get lucky enough to find a new one.
Have a nice cool Samuel Jackson, it'll make ya drunk!! MMM....MMMM Bich

As for the prequel, Xenosaga: DWZM, it's a fairly new game and should be fairly easy to find. And maybe they'll remake Xenogears someday.
