Well,

Bahamut is my favorite. I loved all the different Bahamut summons. It's almost a tie between Knights of the Round, too. I'm sure if they made a Knights of the Round today, it would kick ***. But Bahamut owns.

Another good Esper from FFVI was Bismark. Taught simple spells (Fire, Ice, and Bolt) very quickly, and had a very useful water attack against fire monsters. Also, I'm not sure about this, as the name may very well be from another mythology, but the name "Bismarck" was the name of the German Chancellor under the German regime of Kaiser Wilhelm I. Just an interesting little fact.

They also named a battleship after it.

Anyway, remember in FF7 the Chocobo/Mog summon. Most of the time, you got this one attack where they rush in and do damage. But every once in a while, a large, chubby chocobo would drop from the sky and flaten everyone. Yay! I think they should bring back Hades. The statuses it provided were very nice, and when they dropped him for Doomtrain, I was sad. Diablos from FF8 was a pretty useful summon, as was Cactuar. I never really used summons much in FF9. Haven't played that enough.

That's another thing i really liked diablos and it would have been good to have agravity based gf in more but atomos was like a stupid vacuum cleaner which was @£*!. Although i would have liked diablos in the other ff's.
Does anyone know why they removed leviathan? he was good.

I don't even know what type of mythology Ixion comes from, or what it comes from if not mythology.

just for the record cres, ixion does come from mythology. you know how odin was almost always depicted as being on a horse? well, thats ixion!

and i say anima is the best summon. not only is she cool beyond belief, she really knows how to dish out the damage *cough cough oblivion cough cough*

so yeah, i say animas the best summon, and ixion is odins horse. and although knights of the round did the damage, the animation was waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long. they should have had the same option that 10 has - short animation. and yes, diablos is mad too. i didnt understand what was with the lamp though, dioblos is no genie.

Diablos is my all-time favorite but only cause he had mug and looked the best.

KotR is second on my list, cause he helped me pwn Ruby Weapon.

I hated all the thunder summons....

Bahamut was pretty useful.

Tonberry and Cactuar are pretty cool as well. They look awesome
