Sleeeepy, I should start going to bed earlier. bluetongue.gif

It's been a fairly uneventful week, enjoying not having to do too much. Getting pretty close to Christmas I guess, got no clue about what I want though. Well I guess I should probably pick up one of those charging stands for wiimotes, that'd be pretty handy. Trying to convince myself not to join the trend and buy a sword, it's not like I'd do anything with it anyway. I'm only tempted because of some of the geeky ones available. Stuff like Kadaj's Souba, Cloud's (mislabelled) First Tsurugi, or of course Zangetsu and Tensa Zangetsu. That's the site that Darkie got her viking sword from, by the way. The weird thing is that amongst all those swords and stuff they've got a BFG. eek7.gif

Catching up with a few friends on Wednesday, I'll have to try to swipe the rest of Gurren Lagann. I really want to see more of that. bluetongue.gif
Been having a lot of fun playing Mario Galaxy, truly a great game. I think I'm at 57 stars out of 120, only three short from the final boss. Still haven't tried about 20% of the levels though, and I suspect I'll be motivated to pick up all the stars, so it should keep me occupied for at least a while longer. If I had a complaint, it'd be how segmented the game feels. You're always following a very linear path to any particular star, and the game lets you know fairly well which way to go. I know it was a little like this in earlier games like Super Mario 64, but it's much more the case now. And although there's quite a few different powerups, they suffer from this even worse. You'll use the Bee suit a couple of times in the bee-themed galaxy, then almost never see it again. I think I used Boo Mario a total of once, which was in the Haunted Mansion-themed galaxy. It seems like they're introducing gameplay elements one at a time, but not really taking them further.
The gravity mechanics are innovative enough to pretty much sell the game right there, but it's a pity they didn't try to mix things up a bit more. Maybe they will in some of the later content I haven't seen yet, I really hope so.

In other news, I decided I'd try to learn Python, the programming language. Then again I said that more than half a week ago, downloaded everything I needed, spent an hour or two reading some lessons then haven't gone back to it since. I'm so unmotivated to follow through with anything. bluetongue.gif
It seems like quite a cool language, so I really should force myself to spend some more time with it. Like many other things, this decision was influenced by xkcd. bluetongue.gif

    Night all.

Why do I always manage to somehow pick the french-subbed downloads? It happened a few times with Heroes and that was just a distraction since they were speaking in English. It's a lot more annoying when it happens with anime fansubs, though. sad.gif

*goes to find another Tales of Symphonia OAV torrent* screama.gif

In other anime news I finished watching series 1 of Genshiken, so I started downloading series 2 off dattebayo. Moving slowly closer to the mental scarrage that was episode 5. bluetongue.gif
  • Back yet again (I'm seeing a pattern here)

Well it's been almost 6 months since my last entry, so I guess it's about time for another half-hearted attempt at a blog. Yes, my level of commitment to these ventures is staggering. bluetongue.gif

So yeah... Can't sleep. That's been happening a lot recently, which is frustrating. My internal clock is messed up enough that I don't start getting tired until about 2 or 3 in the morning, which as you can imagine is problematic. Also I'm either tired enough that my right hand is missing every second key, or a few letters on this keyboard aren't working too well currently...

So what else. I found out that in order to avoid screwing up my degree and adding another semester or two to my course, I'm going to need to do a maths subject right through the middle of summer. Fun. I mean it's better than not having some way to fix things up, but it's still not really how I'd prefer to spend that time. I've been off uni for about two weeks or so now, I'd be able to tell you more accurately but the days have been blurring together a bit. I guess I need to find more to occupy my time, hehe.
Celebrated a few friends birthdays recently, so that's been good fun. We went to the zoo for Meredith's birthday, which was a pretty cool idea. It was good to catch up with everyone since there were a few friends I hadn't seen in half a year or two. Darkie was absolutely fixated on the meerkats, had a bit of trouble dragging her away from watching them, it's probably for the best that you can't keep them as pets. bluetongue.gif
A pair of orangutans climbed right up to the viewing window and peered in at Andrew, who was lying down right on the other side of the glass. Maybe they saw some family resemblance there or something, hehe. Lets not even get started on what happened when we went to see the elephants. icon_sweatdrop.gif
I took a camera along and had great fun snapping shots, but I haven't gone through them to see how many are horribly blurry yet, and I'm always a bit hesitant about posting photos of people without their permission. Perhaps later. We went back to Moo's place afterwards, ate pizza and played Guitar Hero 3. Seems fun I guess, but it seems like they more or less just regurgitated the last one with new songs. My exposure to any games in the series has been fairly slight, so maybe there's some subtleties I'm missing.

Went into uni for an anime marathon being run by 3wa, the anime club there that I joined. I joined up in the first week of the year, then pretty much managed to avoid actually getting to know anyone in the club. I went along to some screenings throughout the second half of the year, but that doesn't end up being a very social exercise. I'd been trying to remedy that by hanging out in their IRC channel so I'd get a chance to chat to people before actually meeting them, I think that helped a bit. In any group like that there's enough inside jokes and references that it can be a bit intimidating for outsiders, and I'm introverted/shy enough that prior to that I'd been having trouble taking the step of introducing myself. Still, it was a fun day. I watched very little anime, spent most of the day in the games room. Played Mario Kart 64, that brought back some memories. Some more GH3, the webmaster of the club (Tyris) played 'Through the Fire and Flames' on expert mode. eek7.gif Got some Smash Bros in too, including against a few new people. I think I was probably the best one playing, but there really wasn't much of a difference in skill level between first or last. Ratty, Lex and Sumeet had all gone along since they're in the club too, and we dragged Darkie along. bluetongue.gif

Speaking of Darkie's birthday, went out to celebrate her birthday (late) yesterday, she found somewhere which had glow-in-the-dark minigolf. The only problem was that it was really far away, so there was a lot of driving involved. It was a lot of fun, although personally I thought the minigolf itself was pretty bland and boring, glowingness aside. Darkie had invited Lex along as well as a friend from her uni (Emma), and I was worried those two might feel uncomfortable since they didn't know more than one or two people very well. Seems like that worry was probably unnecessary though, Emma was quoting internet memes with Rat and talking Linux with Lex, and in general the atmosphere seemed fairly relaxed. We got some food after and Rat had all the staff of the place looking on with interest when he managed to stack coke bottles on top of each other, I think about 6 or 7 high? Can't take him anywhere without that kind of thing happening. bluetongue.gif
I mentioned it was a long drive earlier, well I got a lift there and back with Josh. I'd been a little hesitant about that since last time I travelled with him (which would have been back towards the start of the year) he wasn't a particularly safe driver, but since he offered and it was going to save a lot of effort I accepted. All in all that was probably a mistake. His skills aren't too bad, but his concentration really isn't as good as I'd like. A couple of times we had to remind him to watch the road rather than getting distracted by other stuff, and even when he was paying attention he'd tend to be travelling just that little bit too fast on turns, or leaving the braking at red lights a little bit late. The way over wasn't too bad, but it was well dark by the time we left (I think we left at about 11), and we got pretty lost. Lost enough that we were travelling across some very curvy mountain roads late at night, with not a whole lot of visibility ahead or behind us. That still didn't stop him going down it too fast... Eventually he got out his GPS navigator thing, which after being stuck on the windscreen provided yet another distraction from driving. It took about twice as long as it should have to get home, so it was about 1am. By the time I got back I was a bit shaken by it all, really. Didn't actually have a collision as such, but there were a few times when we might have been heading towards a minor collision if Andrew or I hadn't yelled at Josh to stop veering to the side. And we did hit the curb briefly at one point, while travelling at reasonable speed. Not a trip I feel I will want to repeat anytime soon. icon_sweatdrop.gif

This is getting pretty long and it's very late, so lets see what else comes to mind. I've been doing a bit of Guild Wars, mostly a few Hard Mode missions. I think I missed the ball there, since I'm starting to seriously do them about the same time most of the others are just about finished. Makes it much harder to get help without being selfish about the time of others, hehe. A while back I'd been working through all of the EotN dungeons. I've finished all except the final sub-dungeon of Slaver's Exile, Duncan the Black. The hardest part of the hardest dungeon, hehe. bluetongue.gif More or less just waiting for a time that suits to group with a few guildies and attempt that one. In the interest of having this entire blog post not be one huge uninterrupted slab of text, here is a picture I quite liked. I took it in one of the dungeons, can't remember which.

Also some may find the following graph useful and/or insightful.

I guess I should probably be signing off, congratulations to anyone that managed to last through this much of my rambling. If I'm going to stick with blogging for any serious length of time, I probably need to post about what I'm currently thinking about rather than simply summarizing what I've recently done. I guess I'm not really in the habit of writing for my own sake, so my posts tend to be aimed at some non-existent third-party. Unfortunately that means that I'm not really getting all that much enjoyment out of it, since I'm no longer writing for myself. Ari is never on MSN anymore though, so I can't rely on her beating stuff out of me as a means to get things off my chest. I'm also pretty self-conscious about writing anything personal in such a public place, since I'm hardly the most expressive person. Man, I really shouldn't do this kind of thing late at night, I get far too philosophical and nonsensical. I think I'll just leave it at that, and hopefully I'll see you all again before another 6 months have passed. bluetongue.gif

Quick post, since I realized it's been ages since I did.

I'm going okay, just been really busy with studying and homework and such. Makes it hard to think of too much to blog about, hehe. Haven't been playing too much GW, but I'm a few skills away from Elonian Skill Hunter now. I think it was about 4 or so left. So I should get that soon, as long as I don't continuously get swamped with work. Also I'm not much of a halo fan, but this is pretty cool. Been catching up watching Heroes episodes I missed, except then I got a bit impatient and started watching ahead of Australia. It's been pretty slow to get anywhere, getting interesting now though. Also started rewatching the start of Fate/Stay Night after getting a friend to watch it, to any fans of anime who haven't seen that I can definitely recommend it. Also this game is pretty cool, it's like playing Asteroids in some sort of drug-induced haze. (or so I'd assume, anyway ShiftyEyes_anim.gif) Fun, anyway.

Anyway, signing off now. Hopefully I'll update this a little more frequently.

Really quick entry, it's way too late and I need sleep pretty badly. Been a while since I last blogged. Suddenly lost internet access for a while. Eventually I was planning to save some blog entries offline and upload them when I got the net back, but after one quick entry I totally forgot about that bright idea. grnwink.gif

Since then I've just been pretty busy with stuff, between uni, doing stuff with friends and GW-related stuff. Bit of a lame excuse there, but oh well. Just had to stay up until 2 AM finishing an assignment I haven't touched for the last two weeks, so I'm not thinking very clearly. Leaving it until 7:30 PM the night before wasn't a bright idea, neither was underestimating how much longer the Digital Systems work tends to take me when I'm rushed. Or how good I am at distracting myself, spent an hour and a half looking up information about MP3 players. icon_sweatdrop.gif

I'm thinking I'll put my poor old first generation iPod Shuffle out of commission, so I've been investigating what I might replace it with. I'd been thinking of doing this for a while, but now I'm actually getting a lot of use out of the Shuffle it's worthwhile. The few times I've forgotten to take music along on the tram each day I've been bored out of my skull. I'd like to avoid getting an iPod this time I think. Partly because of various things I don't like about them (somewhat more limited features, have to use iTunes to load them up, Apple uses their own proprietary technology and formats rather than sticking with standards, etc.), but I think mostly because I like being different. Too many people get iPods without even considering alternatives, or because of the brand name. I still need to do some more research, but I quite liked the look of the sansa e280. It's an 8GB flash player, kind of the equivalent of the higher capacity second generation Nano, but with more features. Microphone, FM radio, video playback, etc. You can just drag-and-drop files using windows explorer, or load it up using WMP. Also it uses lithium ion batteries, and you can actually get to them yourself, so you don't have to send it off when the batteries die. I quite like the look of it, particularly the glowing blue scroll-wheel. bluetongue.gif

Umm.. What else... We were using Skype while playing GW today, that was a lot of fun. Hadn't heard Lynn or Rylkan before, they both sound pretty cool. bluetongue.gif
Ari refused to talk for ages because every time she tried, she'd crack up laughing. Apparently Rylk has some sort of evil influence on her that makes her giggle? We tried to do Thunderhead Keep on Hard Mode, actually got pretty close to the end of it too. Then we all ended up doing Random Arenas so some of the others could try to win consecutive matches and unlock Heroes' Ascent. Not sure if anyone got that far, but Tan and I had some amusing matches. I was playing as an assassin, Tan was monking, and our team was another monk and a ritualist. As you can imagine, it was really, really hard to kill anything. We got on to the third game in the row, because after 10-15 minutes someone on the opposing team would get bored and quit the game and then we could start getting kills. Unfortunately the third team was just as stubborn as we were, so after about 21 minutes one of our guys decided they'd had enough and left. During all that time I'd managed to kill someone once, and Tan had got killed once. It felt like a lifetime...

Anyway this ended up a bit longer than I expected, I need to get up in less than 5 hours so I guess I should get going. In closing: THE FACT THAT YOU COULD EASILY IDENTIFY THE INGREDIENTS OF MY SANDWICH NOW ONLY SERVES TO MAKE ME MORE DEPRESSED
