Having owned almost every game boy other than the DS, combined with my ownership of a PSP makes this an easy decision.... I take PSP over DS. When I owned the game boys I was much younger and the game selection was tailor made for me. However as I grew older (and sick of Pokemon bluetongue.gif) I wanted to play shooting games like Halo, GTA, etc. So naturally the PSP fits me. On the contrary, I think the DS is better overall for almost anyone. The touch screen offers (mostly) seemless play and allows the player to be more easily involved in the game play. I'm just not a fan of most of the games (i.e. Animal Crossing, Kirby, etc.), but I definately would consider purchasing one if I wouldn't have bought my PSP.

Here are a couple comparitive points between the 2 portables...

Cost: DS, despite PSP recent price errosion, the DS is $129.99 and offers games for under $50.
Games: DS gets the knod here as well. The DS offers new takes at the games which made Nintendo popular.
Multimedia: PSP wins somewhat by default. The PSP can play UMD movies and is an MP3 player. Now Sony needs to stop making those movies cost $25 (these movies do NOT contain special features!)
Online: Draw, both consoles have pretty good online capibilites. Both use WiFi to connect wirelessly, or connect to another portable.
Battery: DS, hmmm..I could have sworn PSP was a portable... With PSP's battery life managing a mere couple hours, the PSP almost isn't portable. Meanwhile, the DS plays forever!
Graphics: PSP, the PSP is a powerful system and can product PS2-esque graphics. The only draw backs are the loading screens. Grand Theft Auto looked great on the PSP.
Controls: DS, the PSP's single analog stick makes controling your digital avatar nearly impossible, while the DS's touch screen can be a little bug at times, but is much more intuitive.

Overall:
DS won 4 out of 7 categories --- B+
PSP won 2 out of 7 categories --- C+
**One category was undecided**

There you have it. I would definately recommed the DS for gamers of all ages. However, if games like Grand Theft Auto (or other shooters) are your thing, buy a PSP. PSP's prices have been dropping in an effort to beat the DS's control on the market as well, so the market for the PSP is perfect for anyone that wants to commit felonies portably.

I've had a PSP before and traded it in, and I currently own a DS, and what I have to say is this:

PSP: Pros 'n Cons
PROS:
  • It is a Movie Player
  • It is an MP3 player
  • It can hold pictures
  • It has a web browser
  • It has GTA games
  • It has a very large screen
  • The graphics are pretty good
CONS:
  • Although there are GTA games, not many others really succeed(ed)
  • The MP3 player is kinda picky
  • The web browser sucks
  • Pixels burn out on the screen
  • It is kinda uncomfortable with its entire layout
  • Its expensive
  • The battery life sucks
  • Games cost more than DS ($50)
DS: Pros 'n Cons
PROS:
  • Two screens
  • Touch screen
  • Some fun games
  • It has a web browser coming out
  • Animal Crossing
  • Pictochat
  • DS Lite is comfortable
  • Cheaper than PSP
  • Cheap games ($30-$40 for brand new releases)
CONS:
  • Dumb idea to release a second DS (DS Lite) after the big bulky DS regular
  • Some games use of the touch screen is dumb
  • They've had some REALLY crappy games in the past
  • Old DS is very uncomfortable
  • Old DS has darker screen than that of the DS Lite
  • Graphics are kinda bad on some occasions
So the ratings? |DS/DS Lite: ****| |PSP: **|
The verdict? DS Lite...
(I'm not biased BTW I was a Nintendo hater, but games like Animal Crossing and Nintendogs drew me in, and I once was a Sony freak that ate slept and dreamed SONY, and I once owned a PSP (like I said above). I just think the PSP will need some major improvements until I buy another one.)

It's games like Animal Crossing and Nintendogs that make the DS suck o.O

Down with handhelds! If you're so obsessed with video games that you have to carry them around with you, you're beyond hope of redemption.

Just because you carry a handheld doesn't mean you're obsessed with games, rather you prefer playing on the go. I know a fair few people that actually ONLY play games on handheld and they are far from obsessed.

Although it depends really. Whether you just use them for games (which is the case for about 60-70% of DS users), or for other things also. They're the same as any other multimedia device (DS is one provided you do get the flash chip along with the software), but its what you mainly want to use it for. iPod - mainly music, PMP - mainly movies, Handheld Gaming Console - mainly games.

Personally, with all the gadgets PsP has, I still don't need one. Already have those capabilities in other things I already own. Plus of course, most of the games are centered with the GTA & FPS zombie crowd.

I can get more use, and do, out of the DS, and their range of games is more to my liking.

Aside from that, it's common knowledge that DS sales are still going strong, and that they beat PsP sales by quite a long way. In fact, last month, there were more DS sales than PS3 sales, so that kind of says what the majority of people think.

The PSP is great, i love it. The screen is great, the games are good, and the graphics are nearly as good as the PS2s. But the DS has this thing called an R4DS...and that basically sold me on getting the DS. When it comes to gaming, i have my 360 now so i can't really afford to pay $40 for a game on the PSP when i could get something, better for $60.

Had Sony used a format that had better access times and used less battery...
