QUOTE
"There is no doubting the fact that the widespread availability of sexually explicit and graphically violent video games makes the challenge of parenting much harder,"
- Hillary Clinton

I agree with Hillary and her stance against violent video games. I certainly don't want my children getting hands on a video game such as Grand Theft Auto without my permission (although they aren't old enough yet, lol). What Hillary wants to do is make sure the ESRB rates the games appropriately and not make mistakes like they did with GTA: San Andreas. Her law will fine companies who sell games to children under the rating level and fine companies who withhold information that would increase the rating.

If San Andreas is R18 or whatever, it shouldn't be sold to children, I agree.

But banning it outright is silly.

But if parents give that game to their children, or buy it for their children, then fine.

People treat video games like childrens' toys when they shouldn't be, they should be treated more like movies.

I still don't see how changing the rating from 17+ to 18+ makes a huge difference. And I don't understand why a game where you beat people up for no reason, steal cars for no reason, and all that stuff, is acceptable for 17+, but when a completely natural thing as sex enters the game, it gets a higher ESRB rating. Shouldn't violence and murder, which has been treated as a sin and crime for thousands of years, be considered a bit more troubling than sex which humans have been not only practicing, but enjoying for thousands of years.

As a last note, I firmly believe that violence in video games does not make kids more violent. It does the exact opposite, it makes for a substitute for violence and crime. When most kids steal a car, they do it because they think it's cool, and they get an adrenaline kick out of it, now you can do the same in a video game, where noone gets hurt. Some with violence. People beat each other up because they're angry, now they can beat some random digital person up, still getting a release for their anger, but without hurting anyone.

that would be true had anger or such urges of violence could be measured as an amount. then, as you stated, these videogames would be suitable substitutes for real life on which kids could take out their anger/urges of violence. however, consider someone who gets angry/violent easily - don't they tend to get angrier/more violent as time goes on? acting on violent emotions only provokes more of those emotions.
i wouldn't go so far as to say that these videogames are the source of the problems plaguing our youth. i AM certain, however, that these video games do contribute to our youth's problems by desensitizing them to crime and violence - the games suggest that it's fun or cool to blow police cars up with rocket launchers. again, although any teen with a 3-digit IQ will know the difference between videogames and real life, don't you think that there's something wrong with teens laughing at the sight of people being killed?

edit:
frty, why are you so opposed to Bush when Kennedy, who in your opinion was the greatest president ever, cheated on his wife with Marilyn Monroe (which, by the way, is considered a sin by the Catholic religion that you claim to be a faithful member of)? of course, my accusations are unfounded, but so are yours.
