Wha? Thought I posted in here... meh.

A "mod" is just a modification. The most common mod for console systems is the installation of a "mod chip" that lets your system avoid copy protection (so you can play imports and backups). If I remember correctly, it's not illegal, but it'll void your warranty and block you from XBox Live.

For an XBox the next most common mod is adding a bigger hard drive. Same deal; not illegal, but you lose your warranty and XBox Live.

Most other mods are more like PC case mods, such as adding a window with lighting inside or whatever.
Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze.

Ye, a modded Xbox isn't illegal, dummy.

It can be used to create custom levels with HEK (Halo Editing Kit, I think there's a Halo 2 version). You dl HEK to your 'Box. You can set wheels on fire and all that junk.

Mods can also make your Box become a Desktop Computer, but if you do this, say bye bye to Live. Instead of Live there's internet. It's a decent computer with the ability to play Xbox games.

I think I'm getting an un-modded Xbox in like a year, so I might as well play around with this one. How do you turn it into a computer? And how do you get a HEK?

First of all, you need it custom installed. Try it yourself, say bye-bye to XBox.
You could ask where to do this at Gamestop or EBgames.

Before you get some guy to install it, buy a mod chip. You need to research thoroughly to find the right chip, since there are a huge amount of mod chips in the world.

And be prepared to get whatever they suggest you get at GS.
