Basically a cop stopped some skater and the escalated to the cop using force on them after they tried to flee.
I personally think the cop did the right thing even if it may have been overzealous because if you flee, expect
to get pinned down forcefully.

Cops go on the biggest powertrips. From what I saw just in that scene, that cop did not have a legal reason to chase after that kid. I don't think there is a legal reason for a cop to ever choke a kid, and also, I didn't hear a single one of those kids get Mirandized. Those cops were using excessive, unwarrented force, and the kids were acting civil. I bet that cop gets dishonorably discharged from service.

Edit: I watched a different video, the cop said: "You're under arrest for resisting arrest." My non-circular logic fails me here.

If he was a security guard, miranda warnings do not need to be read, just to let you know. >.>; I'm taking a two year law enforcement class and majoring in it during college.
Of course this would probably make me biased.

This isn't the whole story, that's for sure.

It looks like this is taking place in front of a hotel of some sort. Usually hotels have "No Loitering", "No Skateboarding", etc signs in front of the hotel. Why? Because if someone gets injured on hotel property, the hotel can be held liable(as far as I know, depends on state). Therefore if you're skateboarding there, it IS an issue. You can't break a law then whine about how unfair it is.

From another forum:

QUOTE
1) They were violating a city ordinance by skateboarding where they were.

2) The cop asked them to stop, one of the kids told them to run, they all booked it and subsequently were fleeing.

3) The officer was trying his best to control a situation on his own, but he had to deal with a couple of punks.

Including a girl not obeying the officers request for her to sit. She then promptly starts walking away like she is above the law.

You only saw one part of the story.

Still, the cop should be reprimanded for excessive force and losing his cool.

And if one of the kids suffered injury, sue the department.

Double bladed.
The kids should have listened to authority instead of going all punk and choosing to go against it.

The officer should not have used such extreme force, but in this situation, it was the only option to control the 'situation'.

There's no "Right" in this subject.

Well, the kids were breaking the law, and I'm sure we all know this. The title of those topic is "Was what this cop did justified?" and not "Were the kids innocent?" Again, I did not see the beginning and I do not even know where this is, but from my standpoint, the cop was acting with excessive force. Imo, this is a much greater offense than skateboarding, fleeing, disorderly conduct (lol, irony), etc. Cops should be held to the highest standards, and if they abuse their power, it is one of the greatest offenses to a civil society. Who will guard the guards?

I think everybody agrees that there was excessive force shown in the video which is why the cop is currently on leave(and will most likely be terminated because of liability) but I can hardly say "Poor Kids" when this wasn't their first offense.(See bottom)

Meanwhile some old woman is being mugged on the next corner.

It reminds me of one time when I was stopped on my way home for supposedly climbing a tree in my neighborhood, while in fact I had been sitting under the tree, which I'm sure there was no law against. I was not on private property, I was alone, and I was not causing any harm to the tree, but one of my lovely neighbors brought it upon themselves to call in and report me, so that I could be followed home by a police car while I'm sure only blocks away an actual crime was being committed.

The way that officer handled those two boys was unnecessary. While it may have not been the best choice to flee, there was no reason to hold the boy down by the neck. bluetongue.gif I doubt anyone enjoys being mishandled.

EDIT: If you watch the uncut version, you see that he grabs the girl by the neck, then with the other arm grabs her friend by the neck when he tries to help her.

It's worth noting that the only things he used to help were words. Yet, the officer still thought it necessary to use strangulation force against him.

I agree that cops use too much force sometimes. It often doesn't require that much force to take a kid down. It seemed to me that the cop just enjoyed going on an arresting spree. Still, the kid shouldn't have run away in the first place.

HAHAHAHHA,
He was running away from the police.
But the cops shouldn't of garbed that girl like that
Also there were signs that said no skateboarding
I think the cope used necessary force or else those kids would of just kept running a way
If that police officer gets in any trouble I would be pissed

Excessive force by cops is pretty common...a lot of times they aren't dealt with either, as that would make the department look bad...

My cousin was a victim of this...he was shot 3 times and killed because he was buying $40 worth of heroin... He may have had an addiction problem, and what he was doing was wrong, but I am 100% sure that his punishment did not fit his crime.

Also, the officer that shot him was given an award. It's sickening.
