People all over Earthia (and beyond) know of a greater force that exists in the universe. Some know how to manipulate it toward one end or another. The isolation that existed during the Third Age led to a number of different interpretations of this power. As a wayfarer's guide, this will explain the major views of arcana that exist from region to region.
Deep within the Zolan Range are the Dharon. Ancient and wise, these people have studied arcana since the First Age. They are so attuned to this power that those who wield it are simply known as the Enlightened. They see arcana as a binding force between worlds, and as a limitless source of knowledge. Due to the influence of the Dharon, the people of Zolandor and Izkaldan often share the same view.
Throughout Aderon, Forlon, and Frionia, arcana is usually seen as a destructive force of nature. They see it as a weapon, but they also fear its potential. Many people of Forlon and Aderon discourage the study of the arcane in fear that it may somehow backfire if used without a complete understanding. Frionia views it as a necessary risk, and methodically trains its defenders in the use of arcana. Arcana-wielders are often known as the Avendil (a-VEN-dil) to these three kingdoms.
On the dark continent of Valeron are the legions of Nemorok. To them, the ability to wield arcana is a privilege for the elite. Wraiths, humans, and shadow elves are usually allowed to study the arcane. Very rarely can a lycanthrope or undead pursue the same studies. To the Valeron, arcana is simply a weapon to use by their legions. They don't have a general name for arcana-wielders, and usually just refer to them by their class.
To Aenoria and Entarca, arcana is often viewed as a means to improve civilization. In particular, Aenoria has taken this interpretation the farthest by building their greatest city within a region of riftlands. Their hovering city is a great example of arcana at work for something other than battle. To them and Entarca, arcana-wielders are often called the Vulantiri. It was after these people that the mysterious "Vulantir" stones were named (otherwise known as "Skyrite" by the people of Telan).
Even the technological empire of Corroria knows about arcana. It is not known to play a major role in their civilization, but they do train their most elite soldiers in its use. To Corroria, arcana wielders are often jokingly called "finger wigglers" unless they're trained as soldiers, in which case they're instead known as the Zaeadon.
More interpretations exist, but these are arguably the major views that influence the use of arcana in different places. I hope this will be useful to you during your travels! |
