The following are some pointers for roleplaying in DarkStorm:
- There is no true resurrection. Consider death to be permanent, unless a character somehow becomes assimilated into the Plane of Ages. It is possible for the most powerful of characters to return from there, but this is usually not feasible in the story. Don't feel as if you can't bring one of your favorite characters back, but make it an appropriately big deal! Have another one of your characters (or someone else) go to the Plane of Ages and awaken the fallen character. Either that, or avoid getting your characters killed. You can get creative with escapes, or even bring in your other characters for a rescue.
- To expand on the death issue, your characters will probably not intend to kill all their adversaries. Unless a character is particularly wicked, it would usually be a big deal to kill another character.
- There is no "magic". The supernatural powers that some may have are called "arcana". Using arcana involves manipulating unseen forces (the Storm) to bring about effects in reality. A character does this entirely with his or her mind (or with items that have arcane power), so there are no words or spells to go along with using arcana. Some characters may do things to help with concentration, such as closing one's eyes or meditating, but there's no requirement to attach magic words to abilities. If you do, consider them to be your character's own creation.
- There are no deities in DarkStorm. The greatest beings who sometimes grant power are just considered leaders, and they are either mortal or they exist in the Plane of Ages.
- Technology and arcana are not mutually exclusive. A character can potentially use both. There is widespread interest in Corrorian technology all over Earthia, so many are quietly learning how to use it.
- Not all guns are high tech. It can be argued that most are not.
- There is no true "good" and "evil". Even some "good" characters will have "dark" powers, and some "dark" characters will have "light" powers. All that matters are intentions.
- You should describe your characters' actions as well as possible, without going over the edge. Try to make their stories interesting, but there's no need to go so deep into detail that something simple requires paragraphs. If it's boring to read, then try to shorten it, otherwise players may not read it all which will be frustrating to you in the long run.
- You don't have to post travel threads in every forum along your character's path. It is fine to just "leave" one region and "enter" the destination.
- This may be common sense for most roleplayers, but often the least interesting characters are those who can defeat everybody.
- This is also common sense, but a character shouldn't be roleplayed as having infinite currency. |
