Hi i thought i wuld try this, so anyway here goes.
I thought it was some sort of weapon, cause the norse use it to fight.
I thinking of a 1 bladed axe or an axe of some sort, because those days when the norse were around i dont think they had chainsaws. So they used axes to cut trees down.
The only part of the riddle i cant explain is the first line One tooth to bite
Thats all i can think of, hope my first attemp it right!

limbs may detach = probably talking about his legs, as we've already established that there's something wrong with them
he's not a strange creature to see = meaning he's not some strange new animal that we're hearing about just now.

of course, only one of his legs are wooden, otherwise his tracks would match.

Yeha i think it is a man with wooden leg too, the whole part tree thing, and termites eat wood so hey wouldn't you hate it if your wooden leg got eaten, and you foot print from a wooden leg woodent (get it? Alright lame joke) match to a normal leg. and you can take it off. Its like a a wooden presthetic or something, so it's not something totally unnatural.

I dont think it is the mind. It's sorta in the sky with the bird.
Is it a shawod whoops i mean shadow? The shadow Doesn't fly but when the bird flys over water the shadow stays on the surface or swims or whatever but it doesn't get wet because it isn't like physical.
Lol this reminds me of peter pan and how he loses his shadow
