that long one's the ion tail. see that other tail jutting out at the side, barely visible? that's the dust tail. but that's not what nuu was asking - he was asking for the purplish halo outlining the comet.
i have no idea what it's called. i would think that it is a part of the comet's "atmosphere" that is comparatively hot, considering that violet light has the highest energy out of the spectrum of visible light. but that's only if the ultraviolet/x-ray detector used to observe this comet took that into account and assigned higher energy visible colors to higher energy UV/x-ray waves radiated by the comet. but yeah, i have no idea. if i had to put together a guess, i would say "outer corona."

p.s. i'm not sure if that image of the comet is in the UV/x-ray spectrum. it might be in the microwave/infrared, or even radio wave spectrum. i don't know.
