Actually, the Earth is due for such a change naturally. I hope it happens sometime soon bluetongue.gif .

decreasing the ozone a little to expose Australia and a few other places to the radiation from the nuclear fireball 90 million miles away

Oh yeah thanks. We might just kill the entire Australian population, but, who cares?

And I thought it was CFCs that were destroying the ozone layer, not CO2? So what you are saying is we need to burn all the oil just to see what it would do to the environment?

Not with you there at all. If we burnt all the oil, then what would we power the world with? What would be the point of doing such a thing, since if the effects were bad we would just have to live with it? There would be no point in worrying about what oil does because we could not use oil anyway. Do you get what I mean?

If I'm not mistaken carbon is a form of a CFC and we are trying to find alternate energy sources to use when oil does in fact run out.

other way around, CFC is a form of carbon (chlorofluorocarbon). found in refrigerants and sprays and the like. the idea of burning up all the oil is probably referring to the notion of global warming, not destruction of the ozone layer.

To tell the truth I'm not sure if they know if CO2 destroys ozone by itself. I'm thinking no, however other byproducts and chemicals we're sending up are destroying it.

Without ozone and even without a magnetic field I don't think it would be all over for Australia though, hehe. Many times in the past the Earth has been without a magnetic field, and while it's definitely unhealthy (and will cause medical problems), that particular problem would be likely to remedy itself within a decent timeframe. Although, I only know this for sure when it comes to the magnetic field, when it comes to ozone I'm not sure if anyone really knows. Both shield the Earth from harmful radiation.

Seeing how magnetic anomolies are popping up in recent times, and how magnetic north is shifting slowly, it wouldn't surprise me if we lose the magnetic field sometime within a thousand years (in which case it would be in the process of physically flipping). That has nothing to do with us though, hehe, that's more in the realm of astronomy and geology. To lose the ozone and the magnetic field at the same time though, I dunno what would happen. bluetongue.gif

If you want to hear more about the magnetic field though, just IM me. grnwink.gif

i don't agree. i'm not sure if the Earth has ever been completely devoid of a magnetic field. the magnetic field is what deflects the very frequent (thanks to the Sun!) small and large chunks of ionized particles away from the Earth. without it, life on Earth couldn't survive - it's not as trivial as you make it out to be.
