Yeah, after all the discussions lately about the topic for what it's worth, I think I know of a suitable name that we can use in place of "Factions"...

I don't think we can find a term that everyone will like, and "Factions" won't be any more out of place than anything else that we've been discussing. The term has worked so far with no problems, and I honestly don't know why it needs to change. There would already be a lot to get used to, and the term "Faction" would still work in relation to the Arbiters.

So that's what we will have unless everyone seems to really want to change it.

Part of the reason for the update is so the RS faction can have its old name back. That's how the faction is known, and in effect it will be our old guild, just with a larger guild around it.

As for the "Faction" title, I don't think we're going to come to a decision about something new. We've had three threads related to this problem as well as MSN conversations, and when it comes down to it, we really don't need to change the title for Factions. So we either choose something that won't be popular with everyone (or may conflict with a faction's own theme), or we just stick with what we have and save ourselves that extra confusion. We don't need to change everything, and some things should carry over so we don't seem entirely new.

This isn't another "choose a name for 'Factions'" thread. Based on input that I've already received, and based on a lot of discussions regarding the topic, this is the decision that's being made for now. If someone has a strong desire for a name change at this point, let that be known, but it's no longer the time to discuss the names themselves. I appreciate the feedback, but the debate can't go on forever. Our guild has already gone around in circles about 20 times with the faction title thing, and I think this will be the easiest outcome for everyone.

Ah well... I always found 'Factions' to be a bit ill-fitting, to me at least there's a certain amount of connotations of warlike or discordant behaviour, which always seemed a bit at odds with us as a clan/guild/order/whatever. However I don't care strongly enough about it to debate it if everyone else is fine with keeping the name as it is.

I personnally would prefer the factions to be called something else, but i guess that as a regular member i don't have very much influence on the descision.

I don't think there really can be a perfect title.

Some of us desire simplicity, which conflicts with others who desire something creative. A simple name would be utilitarian and not very interesting, while a creative name could be confusing to new members or conflict with the factions' actual names. There are also very easily conflicts with names that don't sound like divisions (which consisted of many suggestions), because they carry a theme of their own and don't sound attached to our guild as a whole. So we're either left with something along the lines of "Division", or something obscure that may not be understood by everyone. Everyone seemed split over the title "Division", and among all of the suggestions, I don't think it's possible for a name to be chosen that we'll all like. We're close to exhausting the dictionary on this.

So instead of changing to something half-popular at best, I figured that it would be best to stay with what we're used to. It would be a difficult change to begin with since the term is everywhere, and technically speaking, "Faction" pertains to DS rather well. The Arbiters in particular have members from different sides in the many wars (except Valeron), and in a way it would make a bit of sense because of that. They're factions in their own battles (not within the Order), but they all consider themselves Arbiters and want the conflicts to end.

It's not the biggest issue we have to face by any means, it's just a word to describe our organization. Our factions will still go by their own names unless they really want "faction" attached to theirs.

However, if we really want that name to change, then we can discuss it some more... I just think we should hold onto what we can as long as it still makes sense.
